import_texture_file

Destructive

Import PNG, JPG, or TGA image files into Unreal Engine UTexture2D assets. Saves and verifies the new texture, returning its asset path, width, and height.

Instructions

Import an external image file (PNG/JPG/TGA/...) into a UTexture2D asset. Uses the legacy UTextureFactory path (no Interchange). The new texture is saved to disk and verified by loading it back; the response reports the resulting asset_path, width and height.

Returns: { file_path: string, package_path: string, asset_path: string, asset_name: string, width: int, height: int, imported: bool }

Input Schema

TableJSON Schema
NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
file_pathYesAbsolute path to the source image on disk.
asset_nameNoOptional destination asset name (default = source file stem).
package_pathYesDestination content folder, e.g. /Game/Imported.
replace_existingNobool, replace an asset at the destination path (default true).

TDQS

A3.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare destructiveHint=true and idempotentHint=false, so the safety bar is lower. The description adds real behavioral context beyond them: it uses the legacy UTextureFactory path, saves the asset to disk, and verifies by loading it back. This helps an agent anticipate side effects.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Well front-loaded: purpose first, then behavioral notes, then the return shape. Slightly verbose in restating the return object, but each element is informative and nothing is wasted.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description usefully documents the return object (asset_path, width, height, imported). Combined with annotations covering safety and the behavioral notes on the legacy path and verification, it is largely complete, missing only prerequisites such as permissions or overwrite semantics depth.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so all four parameters are already documented in the schema. The description adds no additional parameter syntax or constraints beyond repeating the return fields, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Import an external image file ... into a UTexture2D asset') with clear input formats. It also implicitly distinguishes itself from the Interchange path ('Uses the legacy UTextureFactory path (no Interchange)'), giving partial sibling differentiation, though it does not explicitly name import_asset or interchange_import_asset.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Usage is implied by the resource and the note that it takes the legacy (non-Interchange) import path, but there is no explicit 'use this when / not when' statement or named alternative such as interchange_import_asset. The agent can infer the scenario but is not routed.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
