create_modulation_generator

Creates an LFO, ADEnvelope, or EnvelopeFollower modulation generator asset at a specified path and saves it with engine defaults; existing generators are returned untouched.

Instructions

Creates a modulation generator asset of class LFO, ADEnvelope or EnvelopeFollower at generator_path, with engine default settings, and saves it. An existing generator there is returned untouched with its own class (not saved). Returns generator_path, generator_name, generator_class, created, already_existed, saved. Configure it with set_modulation_generator_settings.

Returns: { generator_path, generator_name, generator_class, created, already_existed, saved }

TDQS

A3.8/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already cover the safety profile (not read-only, not destructive, not idempotent, closed-world). The description adds real behavioral context beyond that: the asset is created with engine defaults, it is saved, and an existing generator is returned untouched and NOT saved, which explains the already_existed/created outcome flags.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness3/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded and mostly efficient, but the return field list is duplicated: it appears inline in the second sentence and again as a redundant 'Returns:' line. That repetition is wasted space in an otherwise tight description.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description usefully enumerates the returned fields and covers the create/save/collision semantics plus the follow-up tool. It is nearly complete for a simple two-parameter creation tool, with only the sibling LFO tool relationship left unaddressed.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, with both parameters documented (path example and the concrete class list). The description restates the class set but adds no syntax or format detail beyond the schema, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb (creates), resource (modulation generator asset), the exact accepted classes (LFO, ADEnvelope, EnvelopeFollower), and the target path. However, the sibling create_modulation_generator_lfo overlaps with the LFO case and the description never acknowledges it, leaving a small ambiguity for LFO creation.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It explicitly names the follow-up tool ('Configure it with set_modulation_generator_settings') and describes the collision case, giving clear context for use. It stops short of stating when to prefer this over the class-specific sibling create_modulation_generator_lfo, so no true exclusions are provided.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
