get_light_properties

Read-onlyIdempotent

Read all properties of a light actor—intensity, color, transform, shadows, IES, cone angles and more—to inspect or verify its current settings.

Instructions

Retrieve comprehensive properties of a light actor including intensity, color, position, rotation, scale, and type-specific settings. Reads back every field set_light_properties writes (including IES, light function, shadow bias, contact shadow, cast/volumetric shadow, inverse-squared falloff, and RectLight source size / barn doors / source texture).

Returns: { light_name, light_found, light_message, light_class, light_type, light_intensity, light_intensity_units, r, g, b, a, x, y, z, pitch, yaw, roll, light_enabled, light_cast_shadows, light_affect_world, light_use_inverse_squared_falloff, light_falloff_exponent, light_min_roughness, light_lighting_channel_mask, light_temperature, light_use_temperature, light_indirect_lighting_intensity, light_volumetric_scattering_intensity, light_affect_translucent_lighting, light_use_ies_brightness, light_ies_brightness_scale, light_ies_texture, light_function_scale, light_function_fade_distance, light_function_disabled_brightness, light_function_material, light_shadow_bias, light_cast_volumetric_shadow, light_contact_shadow_length, light_contact_shadow_length_in_ws, light_subtype, light_atmosphere_sun_light, light_atmosphere_sun_light_index, light_atmosphere_sun_disk_color_scale: { r, g, b, a }, light_attenuation_radius, light_source_radius, light_soft_source_radius, light_source_length, light_source_width, light_source_height, light_barn_door_angle, light_barn_door_length, light_source_texture, light_inner_cone_angle, light_outer_cone_angle, light_mobility, light_tags, light_level, light_world }

A3.7/5.0
Behavior3/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint=true, idempotentHint=true, destructiveHint=false, so the safety and idempotency profile is covered. The description adds that it reads back every field set_light_properties writes, which usefully scopes the read surface, but does not disclose failure behavior (what happens when light_name is not found – though light_found/light_message fields hint at it).

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness2/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is dominated by an enormous enumerated return-value dump – nearly sixty field names in a single brace block. For a tool whose output schema is absent, listing fields is defensible, but the verbosity is excessive and buries the core purpose sentence. Front-loading the purpose is good; the trailing return block is disproportionately long.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

There is no output schema, so the description must convey the return shape, which it does exhaustively. Combined with annotations covering safety, the agent has enough to call it correctly. The only gap is the absence of any note on not-found behavior at the top level (light_found/light_message are present but unexplained).

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Only one parameter (light_name) with 100% schema coverage, giving a baseline of 4 since no compensation is needed. The description doesn't add name-matching syntax or path conventions, but no gap exists for the schema to leave uncovered.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb (retrieve) and resource (light actor comprehensive properties) and explicitly names the scope of fields covered. The description also references set_light_properties as the inverse, which helps an agent distinguish it from edit-oriented siblings.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The description implies usage as a read-back of light properties but doesn't explicitly state when to use this vs. alternatives like get_sky_light_properties, get_lighting_in_area, or get_directional_light_cascade_settings. The reference to set_light_properties hints at round-tripping but doesn't give a when/when-not rule.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
