v1.17.5Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
With no annotations, the description carries the full burden of behavioral disclosure. It does convey that this is a read-only operation returning the public section inventory, which is adequate for a zero-parameter getter, but it does not mention output format, pagination, or any limitations. The baseline is met but not exceeded.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
The description is two short sentences with no redundant wording. It front-loads the core action ('Get National Post sections') and adds a brief clarifying detail. Every word earns its place.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
For a simple zero-parameter, no-output-schema tool, the description is sufficiently complete: it names the resource, the publication, and the nature of the returned data (public editorial section inventory). It could be more explicit about the response shape, but that is a minor gap for this low-complexity tool.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
The tool has zero parameters, so there is no parameter semantics to add. Per the rubric, this case is baseline 4. The description correctly omits any parameter discussion because none exist.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
The description states a specific verb and resource: 'Get National Post sections' with a clarifying parenthetical defining the output as the site's primary navigation. It is clearly distinct from sibling tools like nationalpost_article or nationalpost_headlines, though it does not explicitly name them.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
There is no guidance on when to use this tool versus alternatives, no exclusions, and no mention of related tools like nationalpost_headlines or nationalpost_news. Usage is only implied by the description itself, leaving the agent to infer context from the tool name.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
