v1.17.5Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
With no annotations, the description must disclose behavioral traits. It states the tool returns fresh stories from an RSS feed, implying a read-only operation and time-sensitivity. However, it does not mention potential rate limits, error conditions, or the exact response structure, which are left to the agent's assumption.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
The description is concise, using two sentences with no redundancy. It front-loads the primary purpose and adds the RSS feed detail efficiently, making it easy to parse.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
For a simple parameterless tool without an output schema, the description adequately explains what it returns (fresh top stories). It does not specify output format, but given the low complexity and the lack of configuration, this is sufficient.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
The tool has zero parameters, so the schema is trivially complete. The description adds no parameter-level detail, but since there are no parameters to document, a baseline of 4 is appropriate.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
The description clearly states the tool retrieves Gulf News top stories from the public site-wide RSS feed, using a specific verb ('Get') and resource ('Gulf News top stories'). It distinguishes itself from sibling tools like gulfnews_headlines by specifying the source and scope, making its purpose unambiguous.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
The description implies usage for fetching top stories but does not explicitly contrast with alternatives such as gulfnews_headlines or gulfnews_article. No guidance on when to prefer this over siblings is provided, leaving the agent to infer appropriate contexts.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
