v1.17.5Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?
With no annotations provided, the description carries the behavioral transparency burden. It states the data is 'live-verified public Daily Mail RSS section inventory,' which hints at freshness and public accessibility, but it does not explicitly disclose whether authentication is required, whether the tool has side effects, or any rate limits. For a simple zero-parameter read tool, this is adequate but minimal.
Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.
Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?
The description is two short sentences with no wasted words. The main action and resource are front-loaded, and the second sentence reinforces the return value without redundancy.
Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.
Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?
For a zero-parameter tool with no output schema, the description is mostly complete: it states the action and what is returned. A minor gap is that it does not describe the structure or fields of the returned inventory (e.g., section names, URLs), but given the simplicity of the tool, this is a small omission.
Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.
Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?
There are zero parameters, and the input schema is empty, so the baseline for this dimension is 4. The description does not need to clarify any parameter semantics because there are none to describe.
Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.
Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?
The description states a clear verb ('Get') and a specific resource ('Daily Mail RSS sections'), and further clarifies it returns the 'live-verified public Daily Mail RSS section inventory.' This distinguishes it from sibling tools like dailymail_headlines or dailymail_news, which serve different purposes.
Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.
Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?
The description provides no guidance on when to use this tool versus alternatives. There is no mention of prerequisites, typical workflows, or why one might choose this over other section-related tools like nyt_sections or dailymail_headlines. The usage context is entirely implied by the tool name.
Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
