select_take_lane_audition

Destructive

Selects an entire visible take lane for audition in Ableton Live, or returns the track to the comp when laneId is null. Rechecks state before applying.

Instructions

Select audition for one entire visible take lane, or return its track to the comp with laneId null. Rechecks native and UI identities/flags. Does not start playback, edit the comp or change mutes/solos/routing. Requires a saved Set with native document identity and one Live instance; macOS English Live, all profile.

TDQS

A4.2/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already flag destructive=true / idempotent=false, and the description adds meaningful context beyond that: it rechecks native and UI identities/flags, and it explicitly scopes the non-effects (no playback start, no comp edit, no mute/solo/routing changes). The environment constraints (macOS English Live, single Live instance, saved Set) are real operational information not present in annotations. It does not explain the two-step confirm/token flow's failure modes, keeping it at 4.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three sentences, front-loaded with the core action and its inverse, followed by behavior guarantees and then prerequisites. No filler and no repetition of annotation data.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Output schema, annotations, and a fully described schema are all present, so the description only needs to carry purpose, non-effects, and environment prerequisites — all of which it does. A minor gap is that the plan/token confirmation workflow (dryRun → planHash → confirmationToken) is not hinted at in the description, which matters for a destructive tool.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so parameters are already documented. The description reinforces the laneId null semantics (already in the schema) and the 'visible' qualifier on the lane, but adds nothing about dryRun, planHash, confirmationToken, or expectedStateVersion. Baseline 3 is correct.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Select audition for one entire visible take lane') and explicitly covers the inverse mode ('return its track to the comp with laneId null'). This distinguishes it from read-oriented siblings like get_take_lane_audition_context and get_take_lane_context without ambiguity.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives concrete usage: pass a lane ID from inventory to audition, or explicit null to return the track to the comp. It also lists prerequisites (saved Set with native document identity, one Live instance, macOS English Live), which sets the call context. It stops short of naming the sibling to call first (e.g., get_take_lane_audition_context to obtain the lane ID), so a 4 rather than a 5.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
