crop_midi_clip

Destructive

Crop a MIDI clip to the observed loop or marker interval, discarding notes or expression outside it. Requires expected state version, track ID, and clip ID; supports dry-run and confirmed execution.

Instructions

Request native MIDI crop to the observed loop or marker interval. Can discard notes/expression and change source coordinates or IDs. Binds native context and returns complete exposed readback; no automatic rollback.

TDQS

A4.1/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare destructiveHint=true and idempotentHint=false, but the description adds specific consequence detail: notes/expression can be discarded, source coordinates or IDs can change, and there is no automatic rollback. Those specifics go meaningfully beyond the generic annotations.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

It is front-loaded and only three sentences, with the destructive consequence and lack of rollback clearly stated. The phrases 'Binds native context' and 'complete exposed readback' are slightly opaque, but overall it is compact.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

The tool is destructive and has an output schema, and the description covers the important irreversibility and side effects. It does not explain the dryRun/confirmation-token workflow or expectedStateVersion requirements, but those are documented in the schema.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the schema already explains all six parameters. The description does not add meaningfully to individual parameter semantics beyond the phrase 'observed loop or marker interval,' so the baseline of 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: 'Request native MIDI crop' to an observed loop or marker interval. This distinguishes it from audio cropping and other clip-editing siblings without requiring the reader to inspect the schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Usage is implied by the MIDI/clip scope, but the description does not explicitly say when to choose this over siblings such as crop_audio_clip or duplicate_clip_loop. It also does not state prerequisites or exclusions beyond what the schema requires.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
