save_native_device_preset

Destructive

Save an exact Ableton device or rack as a new native User Library preset; validates state, refuses duplicate names, and requires a saved Set with transport stopped.

Instructions

Save an exact device or rack as a new native User Library preset through macOS English Live. Sets intended preset naming and changes focus; may rename the source. Requires saved Set and stopped transport. Refuses existing names; verifies Live XML/VST3 artifacts and exposed source state. Audio Unit artifact verification is unavailable. No recall, audible-equivalence or sample-portability claim.

TDQS

A4.4/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations by disclosing side effects not implied by destructiveHint alone: it 'changes focus', 'may rename the source', refuses existing names, and verifies Live XML/VST3 artifacts. It also honestly flags a limitation ('Audio Unit artifact verification is unavailable') and bounds expectations ('No recall, audible-equivalence or sample-portability claim').

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loads the core action, then layers preconditions and limits efficiently. Mostly terse, though the clipped multi-clause phrasing ('verifies Live XML/VST3 artifacts and exposed source state') is dense and could be tighter.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists so return values need no explanation, and annotations cover the safety profile. The description fills the remaining gaps: preconditions, refusals, side effects, and verification limitations for a destructive multi-parameter write.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the schema already documents name length limits, ID formats, and the token/hash fields; the description adds no syntax beyond that. Baseline 3 applies when the schema does the heavy lifting.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Save an exact device or rack as a new native User Library preset') and adds the execution context ('through macOS English Live'). This clearly distinguishes it from snapshot-saving siblings like save_device_chain_snapshot and save_track_state_snapshot.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives concrete preconditions ('Requires saved Set and stopped transport') and refusal behavior ('Refuses existing names'), which tell the agent when this will succeed. However it never names a sibling alternative or states when to prefer a snapshot tool instead, so sibling routing is left to inference.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
