set_layer_collection

Control how a collection participates in a Blender view layer by setting exclude, holdout, or indirect-only flags for rendering and compositing.

Instructions

Set how a collection takes part in one view layer.

Args: collection_name: Collection, at any depth. view_layer: View layer to change; omit for the active one. exclude: Leave the collection out of this layer entirely. holdout: Render it as a transparent cut-out (the objects mask what is behind them), for compositing layers back together. indirect_only: Cycles: it shows only in reflections, shadows and bounce light, not directly to the camera.

Returns: Dict with the collection, the layer and its exclude/holdout/indirect_only.

TDQS

A3.5/5.0
Behavior3/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

No annotations are present, so the description carries the full burden. It usefully explains what holdout and indirect_only actually do visually, but leaves the most consequential behavior unstated: whether a null boolean leaves the existing flag untouched or forcibly disables it, and what happens if the collection is absent from the layer.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Purpose is front-loaded in a single sentence, then a compact Args block where each entry adds distinct meaning. The Returns line is redundant given an output schema exists, but overall there is little waste.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness3/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With an output schema present, omitting return detail is fine. But for an unannotated five-parameter mutation tool, the description should state default/omission behavior and error conditions; it stops short of that.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 0%, so the description must compensate, and it largely does: all five parameters get meaning, including 'collection, at any depth' and 'Cycles: it shows only in reflections, shadows and bounce light'. The gap is that null-vs-false semantics for the three booleans are never disambiguated.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource with scope: 'Set how a collection takes part in one view layer.' An agent can distinguish this from mesh/collection-level siblings, but the description never names neighboring tools such as set_collection_visibility or manage_view_layer to sharpen the boundary.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Provides a usage hint for one parameter ('omit for the active one') but gives no guidance on when to reach for this versus set_collection_visibility or manage_view_layer, nor any prerequisite that the collection must already be linked to the layer.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
