gmail.users.messages.untrash

Restore a specified Gmail message from Trash by ID, returning the updated message resource as JSON. Use it to recover accidentally deleted emails.

Instructions

Removes the specified message from the trash [HTTP POST] — creates or triggers a change; refused under --readonly safety profiles. Returns the API's response resource as JSON — request bodies are built from the typed parameters (typed flags win over the params map), or read whole from body_file Siblings over the same resource: batchDelete, batchModify, delete, get, import, insert, list, modify, send, trash.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
idYes[URL path segment] The ID of the message to remove from Trash.
queryNoExtra KEY=VALUE query pairs for endpoints whose parameters Discovery does not describe.
paramsNoParameter map merged into the request; typed parameters win.
userIdYes[URL path segment] The user's email address. The special value `me` can be used to indicate the authenticated user.me
dry_runNoReturn the request that would be sent, without sending it.
body_fileNoRead the request body from this file ('-' for stdin) instead of building one from the parameters.

Output Schema

idNo
rawNo
payloadNo

labelIdsNo
threadIdNo
historyIdNo

TDQS

A3.8/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description does meaningful work: it discloses that this is an HTTP POST that 'creates or triggers a change,' notes refusal under read-only safety profiles, and explains that request bodies come from typed parameters or `body_file`. It stops short of describing side effects such as what happens to labels or whether the message returns to the inbox.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The purpose is front-loaded in the first clause, and the rest is reasonably dense but mostly useful context about mutation, safety profiles, and request construction. The long sibling list adds bulk but aids disambiguation, so it is not wasted.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given an output schema and 100% schema coverage, the description needn't explain return fields, and it correctly focuses on mutation behavior and request construction. For a no-annotation mutation tool, it is fairly complete, though it could mention permissions or label side effects for full confidence.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3. The description adds useful integration semantics beyond the schema: typed parameters take precedence over the `params` map, and `body_file` can supply a whole body instead, which helps an agent understand how the six parameters interact.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: 'Removes the specified message from the trash.' It also lists the sibling operations over the same resource, but that list does not explain how this tool differs behaviorally from `trash` or `delete`, so sibling differentiation is present only as naming.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Usage is implied by the operation name and the sibling list, and the note that it is 'refused under --readonly safety profiles' gives one relevant precondition. However, there is no explicit guidance on when to use this versus `trash` (moving to trash) or `delete` (permanent deletion).

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
