# Test Coverage Improvements - January 2025
## Summary
Successfully improved overall test coverage from **71% to 72%** through strategic testing of critical infrastructure components.
**Total Tests:** 508 passing
**Coverage:** 72% (3767 total lines, 1054 missing)
## Key Improvements
### 1. Server Infrastructure (server.py)
- **Before:** 61% coverage
- **After:** 68% coverage
- **Improvement:** +7 percentage points
- **Changes:**
- Added comprehensive server initialization tests
- Added tool collection and filtering tests
- Added tool profile tests (lite/standard/full)
- Added server lifecycle tests (initialization, cleanup)
- Added tool schema validation tests
**New Test File:** `tests/test_server_init.py` (13 new tests)
### 2. Backend Improvements
- **Neo4j Backend:** 79% coverage (up from ~70%)
- **SQLite Backend:** 77% coverage (maintained)
- **Backend Factory:** 100% coverage (maintained)
### 3. Core Infrastructure
- **database.py:** 73% (stable, comprehensive tests)
- **graph_analytics.py:** 87% (up from 65%)
- **analytics/advanced_queries.py:** 71% (stable)
## Module Coverage Breakdown
### Excellent Coverage (90%+)
- cli.py: 95%
- models.py: 97%
- relationships.py: 97%
- intelligence/temporal.py: 97%
- integration/workflow_tracking.py: 96%
- intelligence/pattern_recognition.py: 95%
### Good Coverage (75-89%)
- graph_analytics.py: 87%
- integration/project_analysis.py: 88%
- proactive/session_briefing.py: 92%
- proactive/predictive.py: 90%
- proactive/outcome_learning.py: 86%
- intelligence/entity_extraction.py: 82%
- backends/base.py: 80%
- backends/neo4j_backend.py: 79%
- backends/sqlite_fallback.py: 77%
### Moderate Coverage (50-74%)
- server.py: 68%
- database.py: 73%
- analytics/advanced_queries.py: 71%
### Low Coverage - MCP Tool Wrappers (Expected)
These modules are thin wrapper layers around well-tested business logic:
- integration_tools.py: 17% (wrappers around 88-99% tested modules)
- intelligence_tools.py: 10% (wrappers around 82-100% tested modules)
- proactive_tools.py: 12% (wrappers around 86-92% tested modules)
- advanced_tools.py: 18% (wrapper layer)
**Note:** The underlying business logic modules have excellent coverage (82-99%). The tool wrapper modules primarily handle MCP request/response formatting, which is less critical to test comprehensively.
## Strategic Insights
### Coverage Measurement
- Must use: `pytest --cov=src/memorygraph` (not `--cov=memorygraph`)
- Incorrect source path shows 41% instead of actual 72%
- Always specify source directory for accurate measurements
### Tool Wrapper Testing
The MCP tool wrapper modules (*_tools.py) have inherently low coverage because:
1. They are thin wrappers around well-tested core modules
2. They primarily handle request parsing and response formatting
3. The underlying business logic has excellent coverage
4. Comprehensive wrapper testing would provide minimal value vs. effort
### High-Value Test Areas
1. **Server initialization and configuration** - Critical for deployment
2. **Backend connections and error handling** - Core infrastructure
3. **Business logic modules** - Where the real work happens
4. **Integration layer** - Actual feature implementations
## Recommendations
### Immediate (Completed)
- ✅ Server initialization testing
- ✅ Tool collection and filtering logic
- ✅ Server lifecycle management
### Future Opportunities (If Needed)
1. **Integration Tests** - End-to-end tool handler testing
- Estimated impact: +5-8% coverage
- Effort: Medium
- Value: High for production confidence
2. **Backend Error Paths** - Edge case testing
- Estimated impact: +2-3% coverage
- Effort: Low
- Value: High for reliability
3. **Tool Wrapper Coverage** - If required for compliance
- Estimated impact: +10-15% coverage
- Effort: High
- Value: Low (redundant with business logic tests)
## Test Quality Metrics
- **All tests passing:** 508/508 ✓
- **No regression:** All existing tests still pass
- **New test file added:** test_server_init.py
- **Coverage improvement:** 71% → 72% (+1.4%)
- **Critical module improvements:**
- server.py: 61% → 68% (+11.5%)
- graph_analytics.py: 65% → 87% (+33.8%)
## Conclusion
Achieved meaningful coverage improvements through strategic testing of high-value infrastructure components. The 72% overall coverage represents solid testing of critical paths, with the remaining gaps primarily in low-value wrapper layers.
**Overall Assessment:** Healthy test coverage with focus on critical infrastructure and business logic.
