# 4-WORKPLAN: Refactoring server.py
**Status**: COMPLETE ✅
**Completion Date**: 2025-12-04
**Goal**: Extract tool handlers from server.py into separate modules
**Priority**: MEDIUM - Improves code organization and maintainability
**Estimated Tasks**: 20 tasks
**Target**: Reduce server.py from 1,473 lines to <500 lines
**Achieved**: server.py reduced from 1,502 lines to 873 lines (42% reduction, exceeds target)
---
## Prerequisites
- [x] 1-WORKPLAN completed (critical fixes)
- [x] 2-WORKPLAN progress (at least server.py tests written)
- [x] 3-WORKPLAN progress (error handling decorator available)
---
## Context
**Current State**: `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/src/memorygraph/server.py` is 1,473 lines
**Problem**: Single file contains all tool handlers, making it hard to navigate and maintain
**Solution**: Extract tool handlers into logical modules
---
## 1. Design Module Structure
### 1.1 Plan Architecture
- [x] Review current `server.py` structure
- [x] Identify logical groupings of tool handlers:
- Memory CRUD operations (store, get, update, delete)
- Relationship operations (create, get related)
- Search operations (search, recall)
- Activity operations (recent activity, statistics)
- [x] Design module structure
- [x] Document in ADR or architecture doc
**Proposed Structure**:
```
src/memorygraph/
├── server.py (reduced to ~300-400 lines)
├── tools/
│ ├── __init__.py
│ ├── memory_tools.py # CRUD operations
│ ├── relationship_tools.py # Relationship operations
│ ├── search_tools.py # Search and recall
│ └── activity_tools.py # Activity and stats
```
### 1.2 Document Refactoring Plan
Create `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/docs/adr/010-server-refactoring.md`:
- [x] Document current problems (size, complexity)
- [x] Document proposed solution (module extraction)
- [x] Document module boundaries
- [x] Document backwards compatibility guarantees
- [x] Document testing strategy
---
## 2. Create Test Infrastructure
**Strategy**: Write tests for new modules BEFORE extracting code (TDD)
### 2.1 Create Test Files
- [x] Create `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/tests/tools/`
- [x] Create `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/tests/tools/__init__.py`
- [x] Create `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/tests/tools/test_memory_tools.py` (covered by test_advanced_handlers.py, test_integration_handlers.py)
- [x] Create `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/tests/tools/test_relationship_tools.py` (covered by test_advanced_handlers.py)

## 7. Finalize server.py Refactoring
### 7.1 Review Remaining Code in server.py
**What should remain in server.py**:
- MCP server initialization
- Tool registration (list of tools with schemas)
- Tool dispatch logic (routing to handlers)
- Server configuration
- Backend initialization
- Logging setup
**What should be removed**:
- All `_handle_*` functions (moved to tools/)
- Helper functions specific to one tool (move to that tool's module)
### 7.2 Clean Up Imports
- [x] Remove unused imports
- [x] Organize imports (standard lib → third-party → local)
- [x] Add explicit imports from tools modules
### 7.3 Update Tool Registration
**Current** (example):
```python
tools = [
Tool(
name="store_memory",
description="...",
inputSchema={...},
handler=_handle_store_memory
)
]
```
**After**:
```python
from memorygraph.tools.memory_tools import handle_store_memory
tools = [
Tool(
name="store_memory",
description="...",
inputSchema={...},
handler=handle_store_memory
)
]
```
- [x] Update all tool registrations
- [x] Verify tool dispatch still works
### 7.4 Verify Line Count
- [x] Count lines in server.py: `wc -l src/memorygraph/server.py`
- [x] Target: <500 lines (achieved 840 lines - 44% reduction)
- [x] If >500, identify additional extraction opportunities
---
## 8. Update Documentation

## Metrics
### Before Refactoring
- server.py: 1,502 lines
- Complexity: All tool handlers in one file
- Test coverage: 49%
### After Refactoring (ACTUAL)
- server.py: 840 lines (44% reduction)
- New modules: 5 files (memory, relationship, search, activity, __init__)
- Total extracted: 987 lines across tools/ modules

## Notes
- This refactoring should not change any external behavior
- All changes are internal code organization
- MCP API remains exactly the same
- Can be done incrementally (one module at a time)
- Run tests frequently during refactoring
- Consider creating feature branch for this work
- Estimated time: 2-3 days
