# 9-WORKPLAN: Universal Export Refactor (Backend-Agnostic)

**Priority**: HIGH - Unblocks backend migration and multi-backend support

**Note**: Core export/import refactoring complete and backend-agnostic. Full multi-backend testing and documentation deferred to Phase 2.

## Overview
Currently, export/import is **SQLite-only**. This workplan refactors export/import to use the `MemoryDatabase` interface, making it work with all backends.
**Key Change**: Replace direct SQLite queries with `MemoryDatabase.search_memories()` and `MemoryDatabase.get_related_memories()` - both work across all backends.
**Success Criteria**:
- Export works from all 5 backends
- Data format remains unchanged (backward compatible)
- No SQLite-specific code in export_import.py
- All existing export tests pass

## 1. Refactor Export Logic
### 1.1 Update export_to_json Function
**File**: `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/src/memorygraph/utils/export_import.py`
**Current Problem**:

**Solution**: Use backend-agnostic `MemoryDatabase` methods:

- [ ] Export memories in batches to avoid memory issues

## Notes for Coding Agent
1. **Maintain Backward Compatibility**: Existing export files must still be importable
2. **Test Each Backend**: Don't assume backends behave identically - test thoroughly
3. **Performance Matters**: Use pagination to handle large datasets efficiently
4. **Error Handling**: Graceful handling of missing relationships, invalid IDs
5. **Progress Feedback**: Large exports should show progress (important for UX)
6. **File Paths**: All file paths in tests must be absolute
7. **Async/Sync**: Be careful with async/await - export/import may need sync wrappers for CLI
