# Software Requirements Specification Template (SRS) ## 1. Introduction ### 1.1 Purpose The purpose of this document is to define and describe the functional and non-functional requirements for **[Product Name]**. This SRS serves as a definitive guide for the development, testing, and project management teams, and as a formal agreement between the development team and the project stakeholders. This document is intended to be a complete, unambiguous, and verifiable specification of the software system. ### 1.2 Document Conventions All requirements are formatted as a clear, single statement. Keywords such as "shall," "must," and "will" indicate a mandatory requirement. Requirements are uniquely identified for tracking purposes. ### 1.3 Intended Audience and Reading Suggestions This document is intended for: * **Developers:** To understand what needs to be built. It is suggested they focus on Section 3.1 (Functional Requirements). * **Testers:** To develop test cases and plans. They should focus on Sections 3.1 and 3.3 (Non-Functional Requirements). * **Project Managers:** To manage scope, schedule, and resources. They should review all sections, particularly Section 2 (Overall Description). * **Stakeholders:** To verify that the requirements align with their business needs. ### 1.4 Product Scope **[Product Name]** is a **[brief, high-level description of the product, e.g., "web-based task management system"]** designed to **[state the primary business objective or value, e.g., "streamline workflow and improve team collaboration"]**. The system will provide **[list key features, e.g., task assignment, progress tracking, and notifications]**. ### 1.5 References * **[Document 1 Title]**: [Brief description, e.g., "Initial Business Case Study"] * **[Document 2 Title]**: [Brief description, e.g., "User Interface Style Guide"] * **ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148:2018**: Systems and software engineering - Requirements engineering - Part 1: Requirements Engineering Process. --- ## 2. Overall Description ### 2.1 Product Perspective **[Product Name]** is a **[e.g., standalone application, component of a larger system]**. It will interface with the following external systems/components: * **[External System 1]**: [Description of interaction, e.g., "A third-party payment gateway for processing transactions."] * **[External System 2]**: [Description of interaction, e.g., "A corporate LDAP server for user authentication."] ### 2.2 Product Functions The major functions of **[Product Name]** are: * User registration and login * **[Function 1, e.g., "Create, read, update, and delete tasks"]** * **[Function 2, e.g., "Assign tasks to team members"]** * **[Function 3, e.g., "Provide real-time notifications for task status changes"]** ### 2.3 User Classes and Characteristics | User Class | Description | Characteristics | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Administrator** | Manages system settings, users, and permissions. | Tech-savvy, requires full control, infrequent use. | | **Team Member** | Creates, updates, and completes tasks. | Primary user, moderate technical skill, frequent use. | | **Guest User** | Views public tasks or read-only information. | Limited access, no registration required, infrequent use. | ### 2.4 Operating Environment The software will operate in the following environments: * **Hardware**: A cloud-based server environment, **[e.g., AWS EC2, Google Cloud]**. * **Operating System**: **[e.g., Linux, Windows Server]**. * **Browsers**: The web interface must be compatible with the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. ### 2.5 Design and Implementation Constraints * **Technology Stack**: The back-end must be built using **[e.g., Python with FastAPI, PostgeSQL]** and the front-end with **[e.g., Vue.js with Typescript, TailwindCSS]**. * **Compliance**: The system must comply with **[e.g., GDPR, HIPAA]** regulations. * **Performance**: All user actions must have a response time under **[e.g., 2 seconds]**. ### 2.6 Assumptions and Dependencies * **Assumptions**: We assume that users have a reliable internet connection. * **Dependencies**: The development of **[Product Name]** depends on the successful deployment of **[e.g., the corporate authentication service]**. --- ## 3. Specific Requirements ### 3.1 Functional Requirements This section details the specific functions the system must perform. **3.1.1 User Management** * **REQ-AUTH-001**: The system shall allow new users to register with a unique email and a password. * **REQ-AUTH-002**: The system shall authenticate users with their credentials and grant access to their respective roles. * **REQ-AUTH-003**: The system shall allow administrators to create, edit, and deactivate user accounts. **3.1.2 Task Management** * **REQ-TASK-001**: The system shall allow a user to create a new task with a title, description, and due date. * **REQ-TASK-002**: The system shall allow a user to assign a task to one or more team members. * **REQ-TASK-003**: The system shall allow a user to update the status of an assigned task (**e.g., "To Do," "In Progress," "Completed"**). ### 3.2 External Interface Requirements **3.2.1 User Interfaces** * **REQ-UI-001**: The system shall provide a dashboard view that displays all tasks assigned to the logged-in user. * **REQ-UI-002**: The user interface shall adhere to the design specifications outlined in the **[UI Style Guide document]**. **3.2.2 Software Interfaces** * **REQ-API-001**: The system shall expose a RESTful API for external applications to create and retrieve tasks. * **REQ-API-002**: The API will be secured using OAuth 2.x. ### 3.3 Non-Functional Requirements **3.3.1 Performance Requirements** * **NFR-PERF-001**: The system shall handle a minimum of **[e.g., 1,000]** concurrent users without a degradation in performance. * **NFR-PERF-002**: The main dashboard page shall load within **[e.g., 2 seconds]** under typical load conditions. **3.3.2 Security Requirements** * **NFR-SEC-001**: The system shall store all user passwords in a one-way encrypted format (**e.g., using bcrypt or Argon2**). * **NFR-SEC-002**: All communication between the client and the server shall be encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher. **3.3.3 Reliability Requirements** * **NFR-REL-001**: The system shall have a minimum uptime of **[e.g., 99.9%]** per month. --- ## 4. Appendices ### 4.1 Glossary | Term | Definition | | :--- | :--- | | **API** | Application Programming Interface. A set of rules that allows different software to communicate with each other. | | **RESTful** | An architectural style for designing networked applications. | | **OAuth 2.0** | An industry-standard protocol for authorization. | ### 4.2 Analysis Models * [Link or embed a high-level **Use Case Diagram** showing the main interactions.] * [Link or embed an **Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD)** for the database schema.]
