clickup_get_chat_message_replies

Retrieve threaded replies for a ClickUp chat message by message_id, with pagination support to page through long conversation threads.

Instructions

Get threaded replies for a chat message by message_id. Supports pagination. Chat thread URLs (//v/cn/<channel_id>/t/ or //chat/r/<channel_id>/t/) end in a chat message id — pass it here, not to clickup_get_task. That id is usually the thread root but can be a reply inside the thread; if no replies come back, find the thread root via clickup_get_chat_channel_messages on the channel.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
limitNoMaximum number of replies to return (1-100).
cursorNoCursor for pagination. Use the next_cursor value from the previous response to fetch the next page of results.
message_idYesID of the chat message to get replies from.
workspace_idNoWorkspace ID (digits only). Only needed when you have multiple workspaces.
content_formatNoResponse content format.text/plain

TDQS

A4.6/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the disclosure burden and does well: it reveals pagination support and the non-obvious behavior that the id may be a reply inside the thread rather than the root, which explains empty results. It omits permission/auth requirements and response shape, keeping it just short of full disclosure.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the core action, then the URL/routing caveat, then the fallback. Every clause is functional, though the parenthetical listing two URL shapes is dense and could be trimmed slightly.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a paginated read tool with no output schema, the description covers the ambiguous input case, the pagination capability, the sibling to avoid, and the recovery step when results are empty. An agent has everything needed to call it correctly.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds real meaning beyond the schema for message_id: where the id comes from (chat thread URLs), and that it may resolve to a reply rather than a thread root. The remaining params (limit, cursor, content_format, workspace_id) are left entirely to the schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Get threaded replies for a chat message') plus the keying parameter (message_id). It also explicitly contrasts itself with clickup_get_task and clickup_get_chat_channel_messages, so the agent can separate it from the nearest siblings without reading schemas.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives concrete routing rules: chat thread URLs end in a message id and should be passed here, not to clickup_get_task. It also supplies a fallback path — if no replies return, use clickup_get_chat_channel_messages on the channel to find the thread root.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
