Configure an IK controller

pose_set_ik

Toggle and configure a joint's inverse kinematics controller: enable or disable it, pin or unpin its target, allow stretch, and set chain length or bend direction.

Instructions

Turn the inverse kinematics controller of a joint on or off, pin or unpin its target, allow it to stretch, or change how many bones its chain covers. Enabling a controller creates it at the joint's current position, so the pose does not jump.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
uidYesThe id of the figure instance.
frameNoThe place on the timeline to work on. Defaults to the playhead.
pinnedNoWhether the target stays where it is when the figure moves.
enabledNoWhether the controller drives the joint.
projectNoThe id of an open project, from project_open. Defaults to the project used most recently.
handleIdYesThe joint whose controller to configure.
chainLengthNoHow many bones the chain covers.
allowStretchNoWhether the limb may stretch to reach the target.
bendDirectionNo-1, 0 or 1: which way the knee bends.

TDQS

A3.6/5.0
Behavior3/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

The description adds one useful behavioral detail beyond the annotations: enabling a controller creates it at the joint's current position so the pose does not jump. Annotations already disclose that this is a non-readonly, non-idempotent, non-destructive mutation, but the description does not explain other side effects such as what happens when disabling or unpinning.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is two sentences with no filler, and the main operation is front-loaded. The behavioral caveat is placed immediately after the operations it qualifies.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a nine-parameter configuration tool with full schema coverage and annotations present, the description covers the main operations and one important behavioral nuance. It is sufficient to call correctly, though it could say more about alternative IK tools and edge cases.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so all nine parameters are already documented in the input schema. The description groups several parameters conceptually (enabled, pinned, allowStretch, chainLength), but it does not add syntax, defaults, or constraints beyond what the schema provides.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: configuring a joint's inverse kinematics controller. It clearly enumerates the operations (enable/disable, pin/unpin, allow stretch, change chain length), but it does not differentiate this tool from the sibling pose_ik_set.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The enumerated operations imply when the tool is used, and the note about enabling explains a consequence. However, it gives no explicit guidance on when to use this versus alternatives such as pose_ik_set, nor any prerequisites or exclusions.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
