trmnl_create_user_theme

Creates a custom TRMNL user theme with validated settings for colors, layout, typography, and spacing. Requires the theme builder enabled; invalid tokens return 422.

Instructions

Create a theme Requires the theme builder to be enabled for the account. settings is validated the same way the theme builder validates it: a value outside the vocabulary (an unrecognized token, surface, hue, or advanced channel) answers 422; a key the recipe does not read is ignored. advanced is either a mapping (channels/slots restated on one token) or the same mapping as YAML text. TRMNL POST /api/user_themes. Changes remote state or starts work. Run only within the user-authorized scope.

TDQS

A3.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare this is a non-read-only, non-idempotent, non-destructive, open-world mutation. The description adds useful operational behavior: the theme builder feature must be enabled, invalid vocabulary returns 422, unread keys are ignored rather than rejected, and advanced settings accept either mappings or YAML text.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The purpose is front-loaded and the important prerequisite and validation rules are easy to scan. There is mild redundancy with the schema's settings description and a generic safety line, but the overall structure is efficient.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a complex nested-schema mutation tool, the description covers the key account prerequisite, endpoint, validation behavior, and advanced encoding options. It does not describe the response shape, but no output schema exists and create semantics are relatively clear from the context.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

The schema already contains extensive nested descriptions for settings, surfaces, typography, and advanced fields. The description adds some validation and format guidance, but it does not explain the top-level body parameter or clarify the profile parameter beyond what the schema already provides.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description starts with a clear verb and resource: "Create a theme." That distinguishes it from sibling operations such as list, get, update, delete, and import user themes, though it does not explicitly name those alternatives.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives a real prerequisite ("Requires the theme builder to be enabled for the account") and an authorization constraint. However, it does not say when to choose this tool over trmnl_update_user_theme, trmnl_import_user_theme, or other theme-related siblings.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
