trmnl_copy_device_playlist

Copy a device playlist to another device, appending items in source order while preserving appearance, priority, and schedules; existing placeholders for the same plugin are skipped.

Instructions

Copy a playlist to another device Appends items in source order without removing existing target items. Preserves appearance, priority, and schedules. Plugin instances are shared; mashups are copied. Existing setup placeholders for the same plugin are skipped. Both devices must belong to your account. Repeating this request adds the configured items again. Refreshes are queued after copying. TRMNL POST /api/devices/{device_id}/playlist_copies. Changes remote state or starts work. Run only within the user-authorized scope.

A4.4/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations by disclosing merge semantics (items appended in source order, existing target items kept), what is preserved (appearance, priority, schedules), sharing behavior for plugin instances vs copied mashups, placeholder skipping, non-idempotent repeats, and queued refreshes – all of which match idempotentHint=false.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Purpose is front-loaded in the first sentence and each subsequent sentence adds a distinct operational fact. The closing boilerplate about remote state and authorization scope is generic but short enough not to dilute the rest.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given a nested-object schema, no output schema, and mutation semantics, the description covers the edge cases an agent needs (repeat behavior, placeholder skipping, shared plugin instances, queued refreshes, account scope). Nothing essential about invocation is left unexplained.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is only 33%, and the description never mentions the 'profile' parameter or the source/target id structure explicitly – the schema's own field descriptions ('Source device id', 'Destination device id', 'Configured profile name') do that work. The prose clarifies that source is the playlist owner and target the destination only implicitly.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Opens with a specific verb+resource ('Copy a playlist to another device') and the following sentence clarifies it is an append-copy rather than a replace, which separates it from siblings like trmnl_bulk_update_device_playlist or trmnl_add_device_playlist_item.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives clear preconditions ('Both devices must belong to your account') and the append-not-replace behavior implies when this is chosen over add/clear operations. It stops short of naming a sibling alternative explicitly, so it is context-rich but not full routing guidance.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
