trmnl_claim_device

Claims an unclaimed TRMNL device by linking the friendly ID shown on its setup screen to your account, and initializes the starter playlist on first claim.

Instructions

Claim an unclaimed device Links a device that has not been claimed yet (a new device, or a QR code scan) to this account. Sets up the starter playlist item the first time. friendly_id is printed on the device screen during setup. TRMNL POST /api/devices. Changes remote state or starts work. Run only within the user-authorized scope.

A3.6/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already flag this as a non-read-only, non-idempotent, open-world write. The description adds real value beyond that: 'Sets up the starter playlist item the first time' discloses a concrete side effect and explains why the call is not idempotent. The 'run only within user-authorized scope' line adds a caution, though it is generic boilerplate and does not detail auth or reversibility.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the action and meaning, then setup context. Most sentences earn their place; 'TRMNL POST /api/devices.' is low-value implementation detail for an agent, and the closing safety line is generic, but neither bloats the definition significantly.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness3/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a two-parameter mutation with no output schema and a nested body, the description covers what the tool does and its main side effect. It leaves open what is returned after a successful claim and does not clarify the optional profile parameter's effect, so it is adequate but not fully complete.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 50%; body.friendly_id and profile both carry schema descriptions already. The description adds a little context ('friendly_id is printed on the device screen during setup') that reinforces where the value comes from, but it says nothing about the profile parameter or the nested body wrapper, so it does not compensate for the coverage gap.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Opens with a specific verb+resource ('Claim an unclaimed device') and immediately clarifies what claiming means: linking an as-yet-unclaimed device to this account. An agent can tell this apart from read-oriented siblings like trmnl_get_device or trmnl_list_devices, though it does not explicitly differentiate from the nearby trmnl_setup_device or trmnl_identify_device.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

'Links a device that has not been claimed yet (a new device, or a QR code scan)' implies the precondition that the device must be unclaimed, which is useful. However, no alternatives are named (e.g. when to use setup_device vs claim_device), and there are no explicit exclusions for already-claimed devices.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
