# Reindexing Bug Fixes: Code Review Evaluation
## Context
This document evaluates automated code review suggestions for the 4-root-cause reindexing bug fix (Dec 26, 2025):
- Root Cause #1: Wrong table name in fallback query
- Root Cause #2: VERSION.json path resolution failure
- Root Cause #3: Environment errors treated as corruption
- Root Cause #4: Zombie MCP server processes
## Evaluation Principles Applied
1. **Fail loudly** - Never silently fall back when critical errors happen
2. **No backwards compatibility** - Pre-production mode allows radical changes
3. **Delete stale code** - Remove unused functionality

## REJECTED SUGGESTIONS
### ❌ Suggestion 3: Tighten `isEnvironmentError()` heuristics in database-recovery.ts
**What it suggests:**
Make the `isEnvironmentError()` detection more specific/restrictive.
**Why it's rejected:**
The current heuristics are intentionally broad to catch variations of environment errors:

**Risk of tightening:**
- Different Node.js versions produce slightly different error messages
- Different operating systems have different dlopen error formats
- Missing a legitimate environment error = **false corruption detection = data loss**
The cost of a false positive (thinking it's environment error when it's corruption) is low - user just needs to restart or rebuild.
The cost of a false negative (thinking it's corruption when it's environment) is HIGH - user loses all indexed data.
**Verdict:** REJECT - Current broad heuristics are the safe choice.

### ❌ Suggestion 6: Log errors in schema.ts catch block instead of empty catch
**What it suggests:**
Add logging to the empty catch block in `getSchemaVersion()`:

**Why it's rejected:**
Looking at the actual code flow:
1. The function tries multiple paths in a loop
2. Each path failure is expected and intentional
3. **Line 43 already logs when ALL paths fail:**

Adding logging inside the loop would spam the console with expected failures like:

This is noise, not signal. The current approach correctly logs only when the fallback is used.
**Verdict:** REJECT - Current behavior is correct (log once on fallback, not on each attempted path).

### ✅ Group 1: Cross-Platform Compatibility
**Files**: `src/daemon/index.ts`
#### Suggestion 1: `pgrep` not available on Windows
**Current code (line 1013):**

- `pgrep` is a Unix command (macOS, Linux)
- On Windows, this silently fails in the catch block

### ✅ Group 2: Type Safety and Validation
**Files**: `src/infrastructure/embeddings/sqlite-vec/schema.ts`
#### Suggestion 2: Validate `dbSchemaVersion` type in schema.ts
**Current code (line 34):**

**Problem:**
If `VERSION.json` contains `"dbSchemaVersion": "4"` (string instead of number), the code would use the string, potentially causing issues in version comparisons:

**Fix Required:**

#### Suggestion 4: Avoid creating new Error in `isEnvironmentError` call
**Current code (line 163):**

**Verdict:** ACCEPT - Clean code improvement.

#### Suggestion 5: Handle `isEnvironmentError` explicitly in `recover()` method
**Current behavior:**
When `checkCorruption()` returns `isEnvironmentError: true`, the `recover()` method sees `isCorrupted: false` and returns "Database is not corrupted". This is technically correct but provides no actionable feedback.
**Problem:**
User sees "Database is not corrupted" but operations are still failing. No guidance on how to fix.
**Fix Required:**
