# Test Suite Improvements for Session-Mgmt-MCP
## Overview
This document details the improvements made to the test suite for the session-buddy project. The goal was to enhance test coverage, add robust testing patterns, and improve overall test quality.
## New Test Categories Added
### 1. Property-Based Tests
**File**: `tests/unit/test_utilities_property_based.py`
Property-based tests using Hypothesis have been added to test invariants and properties of system behavior. These tests generate randomized inputs to verify that certain properties hold true regardless of input variations.
Key additions:
- Tests for reflection storage and retrieval that verify content preservation
- Tests for similarity search that ensure result consistency
- Tests for embedding generation that verify consistency for same inputs
- Tests for database operations that verify unique ID generation
### 2. Performance and Benchmarking Tests
**File**: `tests/performance/test_performance_benchmarks.py`
Performance tests have been added to monitor the efficiency of critical operations. These tests use pytest-benchmark to measure operation times and detect performance regressions.
Key additions:
- Reflection storage performance tests with different dataset sizes
- Similarity search performance tests with varying data volumes
- Large dataset performance tests (up to 500 reflections)
- Concurrent operations performance tests
- Basic memory usage stability tests
### 3. Edge Case and Error Condition Tests
**File**: `tests/unit/test_session_manager_edge_cases.py`
Comprehensive tests for error conditions and edge cases have been added to ensure robustness:
Key additions:
- Tests for empty and nonexistent directories
- Tests for permission errors and restricted access
- Tests for malformed project files
- Tests for missing dependencies (like UV package manager)
- Tests for operations with no Git repository
- Tests for timeout conditions and hanging operations
- Tests for unusually large inputs
### 4. Integration Tests
**File**: `tests/integration/test_session_complete_workflow.py`
End-to-end integration tests have been added to validate complete workflows:
Key additions:
- Complete session lifecycle tests (init → checkpoint → end)
- Tests combining session operations with reflection database
- Tests for permission and trust operations
- Integration with quality scoring system
- Tests for concurrent session operations
- Integration with search functionality
- Tests with actual Git repository operations
- Error recovery tests
### 5. Security Tests
**File**: `tests/security/test_security.py`
Security-focused tests have been added to identify potential vulnerabilities:
Key additions:
- Path traversal protection tests
- SQL injection prevention in search operations
- Tests for executable content storage
- Large content handling to prevent resource exhaustion
- Special character handling tests
- Reflection ID manipulation protection
- Environment variable injection prevention
## Testing Infrastructure Enhancements
### Test Helpers
The `tests/helpers.py` file was already well-structured and includes:
- `TestDataFactory`: For generating test data with realistic patterns
- `AsyncTestHelper`: For async testing utilities
- `DatabaseTestHelper`: For database testing utilities
- `MockingHelper`: For mocking in tests
- `AssertionHelper`: For test assertions
- `PerformanceHelper`: For performance testing
### Test Configuration
The `pyproject.toml` includes comprehensive testing configuration:
- pytest configuration with multiple markers
- Coverage settings with appropriate thresholds
- Type checking configuration
- Linting and formatting rules
## Test Run Commands
To run the complete test suite:
```bash
# Run all tests
uv run pytest
# Run tests with coverage
uv run pytest --cov=session_buddy --cov-report=html
# Run performance tests specifically
uv run pytest tests/performance/
# Run property-based tests specifically
uv run pytest tests/unit/test_utilities_property_based.py
# Run benchmark tests with benchmark output
uv run pytest tests/performance/test_performance_benchmarks.py --benchmark-only
```
## Quality Metrics
After these improvements:
- Test coverage has been increased for edge cases and error conditions
- Performance benchmarks are in place to detect regressions
- Security vulnerabilities are systematically tested
- Property-based tests ensure invariants hold across varied inputs
- Integration tests validate complete workflows
## Future Improvements
Future areas for testing improvement:
- Mutation testing to verify test quality
- Chaos engineering tests to verify resilience
- API contract tests if external interfaces are added
- Additional performance tests under load
- More comprehensive security testing with specialized tools
