# Test Improvement Plan for Session-Mgmt-MCP
## Overview
This document outlines the improvements to be made to the test suite for the session-buddy project. The goal is to enhance test coverage, add more robust testing patterns, and improve overall test quality.
## Current Test Infrastructure Analysis
- Comprehensive fixture setup in `conftest.py`
- Test helpers in `helpers.py` with utilities for data generation, mocking, and assertions
- Well-organized test directories: unit, integration, functional, performance, security
- Good async test support using pytest-asyncio
- Coverage reporting configured
## Identified Areas for Improvement

- [ ] Test database operations with real database connections
- [ ] Test embedding generation with different content types
- [ ] Test git operations with various repository states
### Performance Tests
- [ ] Benchmark search operations with large datasets
- [ ] Measure memory usage during reflection storage
- [ ] Benchmark quality scoring algorithms
- [ ] Performance tests for concurrent operations
### Security Tests
- [ ] Test for injection vulnerabilities in search
- [ ] Validate file handling and path traversal protection
- [ ] Test permissions and access control mechanisms
## Implementation Approach
### Phase 1: Basic Coverage Enhancement
- Add unit tests for uncovered functions
- Address critical edge cases in error handling
- Implement basic property-based tests for core functions
### Phase 2: Advanced Testing
- Add comprehensive integration tests
- Implement performance benchmarks
- Add security-focused tests
### Phase 3: Quality Assurance
- Set up continuous testing pipeline
- Implement test result reporting
- Establish test coverage thresholds
## Tools and Techniques
- Hypothesis for property-based testing
- pytest-benchmark for performance testing
- Coverage.py for coverage reporting
- pytest-timeout for detecting hanging tests
- Mocking with unittest.mock and pytest-mock
## Success Metrics
- Increase test coverage to 85%+ for critical modules
- Add 50+ new test cases covering edge cases
- Implement 10+ property-based tests
- Establish performance benchmarks for key operations
- Eliminate critical and high severity issues identified by tests
## Timeline
- Phase 1: 1 week
- Phase 2: 2 weeks
- Phase 3: 1 week
