# Test Suite Improvements
## Current State Assessment
### Test Statistics
- **Total Tests**: 1,525 tests collected
- **Current Coverage**: 15.49% (Target: 35%)
- **Passing**: ~1,500+ tests
- **Failing**: ~4 tests (database-related)
### Key Issues Identified
1. **Configuration Issues** ā
FIXED
- Fixed pytest 9.0+ incompatibility (converted to `[tool.pytest]` with native TOML types)
- Fixed ACB dependency resolution (switched from local path to GitHub source)
1. **Outdated Test Patterns** ā
FIXED
- Removed obsolete `get_session_logger` patches after DI migration
- Updated all functional tests to pass logger via constructor
1. **Failing Tests** š§ IN PROGRESS
- 4 database initialization tests failing
- Related to `ReflectionDatabase` vs `ReflectionDatabaseAdapter` confusion
1. **Coverage Gaps** š
- Many modules at 0% coverage
- Core functionality needs more test coverage:
- `worktree_manager.py`: 0%
- `validated_memory_tools.py`: 0%
- `quality_metrics.py`: 0%
- `recommendation_engine.py`: 0%
## Improvements Implemented
### 1. Fixed Pytest Configuration
**File**: `pyproject.toml`
- Converted `[tool.pytest.ini_options]` ā `[tool.pytest]` for pytest 9.0+
- Changed `addopts` from string to list: `["--cov=session_buddy", "--cov-report=term"]`
- Changed `timeout` from int to string: `"300"`
### 2. Fixed ACB Dependency
**File**: `pyproject.toml`
```toml
[tool.uv.sources.acb]
git = "https://github.com/lesleslie/acb.git"
branch = "main"
```
### 3. Updated Test Patterns
**File**: `tests/functional/test_session_workflows.py`
- Removed all `@patch("session_buddy.core.session_manager.get_session_logger")` decorators
- Updated `SessionLifecycleManager()` ā `SessionLifecycleManager(logger=Mock())`
- Applied to 11 test methods across 3 test classes
## Planned Improvements
### 1. Fix Database Test Failures
**Priority**: HIGH
- Update `test_simple_validation.py` to use correct `ReflectionDatabaseAdapter`
- Ensure consistent database import patterns across all tests
- Fix `__del__` AttributeError in `ReflectionDatabase`
### 2. Improve Test Fixtures
**Priority**: MEDIUM
- Add more reusable fixtures for common test scenarios
- Create database fixtures with proper ACB adapter setup
- Add fixtures for common mock scenarios (git, permissions, logger)
### 3. Add Property-Based Tests
**Priority**: MEDIUM
- Use Hypothesis for testing quality scoring algorithms
- Test token optimization with random inputs
- Test search functionality with varied data
### 4. Enhance Async Test Patterns
**Priority**: MEDIUM
- Add better async/await test patterns
- Test concurrent operations
- Add timeout and cancellation tests
### 5. Increase Coverage
**Priority**: HIGH
- Target 35% minimum coverage
- Focus on high-value modules:
- `quality_utils_v2.py`: 15.74% ā 40%+
- `session_tools.py`: 15.24% ā 40%+
- `memory_tools.py`: 10.28% ā 35%+
### 6. Add Edge Case Tests
**Priority**: MEDIUM
- Test error conditions
- Test boundary values
- Test resource exhaustion scenarios
- Test concurrent access patterns
### 7. Update Test Documentation
**Priority**: LOW
- Add docstrings to all test methods
- Update test markers
- Create testing guide
## Test Organization
### Current Structure
```
tests/
āāā conftest.py (global fixtures)
āāā fixtures/ (specialized fixtures)
āāā functional/ (end-to-end tests)
āāā integration/ (component integration tests)
āāā performance/ (performance benchmarks)
āāā security/ (security tests)
āāā unit/ (unit tests)
```
### Recommended Additions
- `tests/property/` - Property-based tests with Hypothesis
- `tests/regression/` - Regression test suite
- `tests/helpers.py` - Enhanced test helper utilities
## Next Steps

## Notes
- All tests should use proper async/await patterns
- Mock external dependencies (file system, network, git)
- Use temporary directories for file operations
- Clean up resources in finally blocks or fixtures
- Follow pytest best practices for test organization
