# MCPtrace Documentation Improvement Plan
Based on MCP best practices and security standards, this document outlines a comprehensive plan to improve the MCPtrace server documentation and implementation.
## Executive Summary
MCPtrace needs significant improvements in security, documentation, error handling, and robustness to meet MCP protocol standards. This plan prioritizes critical security fixes while establishing a path toward a production-ready implementation.
## Phase 1: Critical Security Fixes (Immediate)
### 1.1 Remove Hardcoded Password
- **Current Issue**: Password "123456" hardcoded in server.py
- **Action Items**:
- Create SECURITY.md documenting passwordless sudo setup
- Update server.py to use passwordless sudo
- Add environment variable support as fallback
- Document secure credential management
### 1.2 Input Validation
- **Current Issue**: No validation of bpftrace programs
- **Action Items**:
- Create SAFE_USAGE.md with allowed patterns
- Implement bpftrace syntax validator
- Add resource limit enforcement
- Document security boundaries
### 1.3 Security Documentation
- **Files to Create**:
- `SECURITY.md` - Security best practices and warnings
- `SAFE_USAGE.md` - Safe bpftrace patterns and examples
- `THREAT_MODEL.md` - Threat analysis and mitigations
## Phase 2: Core Documentation (Week 1-2)
### 2.1 API Reference Documentation
- **Files to Create**:
- `docs/API.md` - Complete API reference
- `docs/ERROR_CODES.md` - Error codes and recovery
- `docs/EXAMPLES.md` - Comprehensive examples
### 2.2 User Guides
- **Files to Create**:
- `docs/QUICKSTART.md` - 5-minute getting started
- `docs/COMMON_TRACES.md` - Common tracing scenarios
- `docs/TROUBLESHOOTING.md` - Problem resolution guide
### 2.3 Architecture Documentation
- **Files to Update**:
- Expand `doc/mcp-bpftrace-design.md` with:
- Security architecture
- Resource management
- Error handling patterns
- Future extensibility
## Phase 3: Implementation Documentation (Week 3-4)
### 3.1 Development Guide
- **Files to Create**:
- `CONTRIBUTING.md` - Contribution guidelines
- `docs/DEVELOPMENT.md` - Development setup and workflow
- `docs/TESTING.md` - Testing strategies and examples
### 3.2 Deployment Documentation
- **Files to Create**:
- `docs/DEPLOYMENT.md` - Production deployment guide
- `docs/MONITORING.md` - Health checks and metrics
- `docs/CONFIGURATION.md` - Configuration options
## Phase 4: Advanced Features (Month 2)
### 4.1 MCP Compliance
- **Files to Create**:
- `docs/MCP_COMPLIANCE.md` - MCP standard compliance
- `docs/TRANSPORT.md` - Transport options (stdio, HTTP/SSE)
- `docs/RESOURCES.md` - MCP resource implementation
### 4.2 Integration Guides
- **Files to Create**:
- `docs/integrations/CLAUDE_DESKTOP.md`
- `docs/integrations/CLAUDE_CODE.md`
- `docs/integrations/CUSTOM_CLIENTS.md`

## Content Guidelines
### 1. Security-First Approach
- Every document should include relevant security warnings
- Use clear WARNING and DANGER callouts
- Provide secure-by-default examples
### 2. MCP Compliance
- Follow RFC 2119 keyword conventions (MUST, SHOULD, MAY)
- Include consent and authorization flows
- Document data privacy considerations
### 3. User Experience
- Start with simplest examples
- Progress to advanced use cases
- Include troubleshooting for each feature
- Provide clear error recovery paths
### 4. Code Examples
- All examples must be tested and working
- Include both safe and unsafe patterns (clearly marked)
- Show complete error handling
- Demonstrate resource cleanup
