get_topology

Discover the Active Directory forest and domain structure. Returns infrastructure and directory IDs for use with other tools.

Instructions

Discover the Active Directory environment as a Forest -> Domain tree. Returns each infrastructure (forest) with its directories (domains) and their IDs, so you can obtain the infrastructureId / directoryId values required by other tools. This is the topology (containment) axis and is independent of profiles. Call this first when you do not already know the IDs of the forests or domains you need to query.

Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Description explains it returns topology and IDs, implying read-only operation. No annotations exist, but it doesn't explicitly state no side effects, slightly reducing transparency.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three sentences, each with distinct value: action, output, usage hint. No redundancy, well-structured.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Sufficiently complete given no parameters and no output schema, but could mention return structure format. Still, it provides key information that IDs are returned for use in other tools.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

No parameters, so baseline 4 applies. Description doesn't need to add parameter meaning; the schema coverage is 100%.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description clearly states the tool discovers the Active Directory environment as a forest->domain tree, returns infrastructure and directory IDs, and distinguishes itself from sibling tools that require those IDs.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly instructs to call this first when IDs are unknown, and explains it is the containment axis independent of profiles, providing clear when-to-use guidance.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
