List or create bookmark backups

browser_bookmark_backup
Destructive

List existing JSON bookmark backups or create a new backup file in the Firefox profile, providing a supported alternative when HTML bookmark import/export is unavailable.

Instructions

List the JSON bookmark backups in the profile and optionally create a new one. MEASURED: the module is resource://gre/modules/PlacesBackups.sys.mjs and exports PlacesBackups with getBackupFiles / getMostRecentBackup / saveBookmarksToJSONFile / create / getBookmarkCountForFile. Note PlacesUtils.importFromHTML / exportToHTML do NOT exist in this build, so HTML import/export is unavailable — JSON backup is the supported path.

TDQS

A3.5/5.0
Behavior3/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations declare destructiveHint=true, and the description correctly signals that 'create' writes a new file, so there is no contradiction. However it never explains what the destructive flag means in practice — whether an existing backup is overwritten, where files are written, or whether the operation is reversible — and the export-symbol listing is implementation detail rather than agent-facing behavior.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness3/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The purpose is front-loaded in a single clear sentence, which is good structure. The remainder is a module path plus an export-symbol inventory ('getBackupFiles / getMostRecentBackup / saveBookmarksToJSONFile / create / getBookmarkCountForFile') that costs tokens without changing how an agent would call the tool.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness3/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description is the only source for what 'list' returns, and it never says (file paths? names? timestamps?). For a simple one-parameter tool this is a modest but real gap; the note ruling out HTML export is the main value added.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

There is a single parameter with 100% schema description coverage and an inline enum explanation ('list = show existing backups; create = write a new one'). The description merely restates those two actions, adding no format, naming, or scope detail beyond the schema, so the baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The first sentence states a concrete verb+resource ('List the JSON bookmark backups in the profile and optionally create a new one'), which is unambiguous. The closing note that HTML import/export is unavailable implicitly separates this tool from the bookmarks_export/import siblings, though it never names them directly.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives clear operational context: use list to inspect existing backups, create to write a new one, and it steers the agent away from an HTML path that does not exist in this build. It stops short of explicitly naming sibling tools (browser_bookmarks_export, browser_bookmarks_import) or stating when a backup should be taken.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
