# Heatmap API Population Count Verification
## Overview
This document verifies that the heatmap-data API correctly queries for and returns population count data from the facility table.
## Verification Results
### API Endpoint
- **Endpoint**: `http://localhost:8082/api/heatmap-data`
- **Method**: GET
- **Status**: ✅ Working correctly
### Data Structure
The API returns a JSON array of facility objects with the following structure:
```json
{
"id": 99,
"name": "Broward Transitional Center",
"latitude": 26.1224,
"longitude": -80.1368,
"address": null,
"population_count": 651,
"detainee_count": 118
}
```
### Required Fields Verification
✅ All facilities include the required fields:
- `id`
- `name`
- `latitude`
- `longitude`
- `address`
- `population_count`
- `detainee_count`
### Database Query Verification
✅ The database query in `src/ice_locator_mcp/database/manager.py` correctly includes population_count:
```sql
SELECT f.id, f.name, f.latitude, f.longitude, f.address, f.population_count, COUNT(DISTINCT dlh.detainee_id) as detainee_count
FROM facilities f
LEFT JOIN detainee_location_history dlh ON f.id = dlh.facility_id
AND dlh.end_date IS NULL
GROUP BY f.id, f.name, f.latitude, f.longitude, f.address, f.population_count
ORDER BY f.name
```
### Data Quality Checks
✅ All tests passed:
- Facilities with population data: 30
- Facilities without population data: 663
- No facilities with negative population counts
- Specific facilities verified:
- Broward Transitional Center: 651 population (✅ verified)
- Baker County Sheriff's Office, FLORIDA: 260 population (✅ verified)
- Orange County Jail: 165 population (✅ verified)
### API Implementation
✅ The heatmap API correctly calls the database manager method:
```python
def get_heatmap_data(self) -> List[Dict]:
"""
Get aggregated data for heatmap visualization.
Returns:
List of facilities with coordinates and detainee counts
"""
try:
self.connect_database()
heatmap_data = self.db_manager.get_heatmap_data()
return heatmap_data
except Exception as e:
raise HTTPException(
status_code=500,
detail=f"Failed to retrieve heatmap data: {str(e)}"
)
finally:
self.disconnect_database()
```
## Conclusion
The heatmap-data API is correctly implemented to query for and return population count data from the facility table. The implementation includes:
1. ✅ Database schema with population_count column
2. ✅ Database query that selects population_count from facilities table
3. ✅ API endpoint that returns population_count in JSON response
4. ✅ Proper error handling and data validation
5. ✅ Verified data quality with test scripts
The API is ready for use in frontend applications to display both current detainee counts and facility population capacities.
