# Phase 8: Unreal Engine Communication Refinement ## Overview This phase focuses on refining the Unreal Engine communication system to match the structured approach used in the Blender integration, improving stability, maintainability, and security. ## Tasks ### 1. Analysis of Current System - [ ] Review current implementation in `unreal_connection.py` - [ ] Identify common operations and patterns in Unreal Engine interaction - [ ] Map existing code execution patterns to potential structured functions - [ ] Document limitations and risks of current approach ### 2. Design Structured API - [ ] Define a comprehensive set of functions for Unreal Engine operations - [ ] Create clear categorization (scene management, asset handling, etc.) - [ ] Design proper parameter validation and error handling - [ ] Maintain backward compatibility with existing code - [ ] Document API design decisions ### 3. Implementation - [ ] Create `extended_unreal_plugin.py` with pre-defined functions - [ ] Develop `extended_unreal_connection.py` as an interface layer - [ ] Implement proper error handling and response formatting - [ ] Add appropriate logging and debugging support - [ ] Ensure all functions have clear documentation ### 4. Integration - [ ] Update UEPythonServer plugin to support the new structured approach - [ ] Modify server core to utilize the structured API - [ ] Ensure backward compatibility with existing AI tools - [ ] Update relevant documentation - [ ] Create migration guide for existing users ### 5. Testing - [ ] Develop comprehensive tests for new API functions - [ ] Verify stability under various conditions - [ ] Test performance impact of the new structure - [ ] Validate error handling and recovery - [ ] Test with AI agents to ensure smooth transition ## Testing Procedures - Unit testing of individual API functions - Integration testing with MCP server - Error condition testing and recovery validation - Performance benchmarking compared to direct code execution - AI agent testing with structured commands ## Deliverables - Structured Unreal Engine API documentation - Implementation of `extended_unreal_plugin.py` - Implementation of `extended_unreal_connection.py` - Updated UEPythonServer plugin - Test suite for the new API - Migration guide for existing users ## Expected Outcomes 1. A new structured API for Unreal Engine operations 2. Improved stability and error handling 3. More consistent experience between Blender and Unreal Engine 4. Better documentation of available Unreal Engine functionality 5. Enhanced security by limiting execution scope 6. Easier maintenance and extension of Unreal Engine features ## Success Metrics - Successfully implement all common Unreal Engine operations as structured functions - Reduce error rates in Unreal Engine operations by at least 50% - Maintain or improve performance compared to direct code execution - Achieve positive feedback from AI agents and users on the improved stability - Complete documentation of all new API functions
