# Project Update: Exa-Based NLP Implementation ## Overview This update migrates the Analytical MCP Server's advanced NLP capabilities from using Hugging Face to exclusively using Exa. This consolidation simplifies API dependencies and maintenance while preserving all functionality. ## Verification Summary A comprehensive verification has confirmed that: 1. ✅ All Hugging Face dependencies have been removed from `package.json` 2. ✅ All Hugging Face API key references have been removed from `config.ts` 3. ✅ All Hugging Face code has been removed from `advanced_ner.ts` 4. ✅ There are no remaining references to Hugging Face in the entire codebase 5. ✅ The README has been updated to reflect the dependency changes 6. ✅ Documentation has been updated for the new implementation ## Files Modified 1. `package.json`: Removed Hugging Face dependency 2. `src/utils/config.ts`: Removed Hugging Face API key, added NLP configuration 3. `src/utils/advanced_ner.ts`: Completely reimplemented to use Exa 4. `tools/check-api-keys.js`: Updated to check only Exa API key 5. `.env.example`: Updated with new NLP configuration options 6. `README.md`: Updated to reflect new dependencies and capabilities ## Files Created 1. `src/utils/__tests__/advanced_ner.test.ts`: Tests for new implementation 2. `examples/advanced_nlp_demo.js`: Demo of new NLP capabilities 3. `docs/advanced-nlp.md`: Documentation for advanced NLP features 4. `FEATURE_UPDATES.md`: Detailed changes and benefits 5. `PROJECT_UPDATE_SUMMARY.md`: This summary document ## Benefits of This Change ### 1. API Consolidation - Reduced external API dependencies from two to one - Simplified API key management - Single point of integration for rate limiting and caching ### 2. Architecture Improvements - More consistent implementation using existing Exa integration - Better fallback mechanisms for offline operation - Enhanced context-awareness through search integration ### 3. Maintainability - Reduced dependencies to maintain - Consistent error handling and logging - Better documentation ## Configuration The new implementation requires only the Exa API key: ``` EXA_API_KEY=your_exa_api_key_here ``` Additional configuration options: ``` # NLP Configuration NLP_USE_EXA=true # Use Exa for named entity recognition NLP_EXA_NUM_RESULTS=3 # Number of search results to use for NER NLP_EXA_USE_WEB=true # Use web results for entity recognition NLP_EXA_USE_NEWS=false # Use news results for entity recognition NLP_COREFERENCE_ENABLED=true # Enable coreference resolution NLP_RELATIONSHIP_ENABLED=true # Enable relationship extraction ``` ## Testing The new implementation has been tested with: 1. Unit tests for individual components 2. Integration tests for the complete NLP pipeline 3. Manual verification with the demo application All tests pass, confirming that the functionality is maintained. ## Next Steps 1. Continue to optimize performance of the Exa-based NLP implementation 2. Enhance caching strategies to minimize API usage 3. Expand test coverage for diverse text types 4. Implement additional NLP capabilities based on Exa research This update successfully completes the migration from Hugging Face to Exa while maintaining all functionality and improving the architecture of the system.
