## Task T005: Create Performance Baseline Directories
### Directories Created
1. **`performance_baselines/`** - ✅ Already exists
- Purpose: Store pytest-benchmark baseline JSON files
- Status: Created in prior task (009-v2-connection-mgmt)
- Contains: `README.md`, `.gitignore`, baseline files
2. **`docs/performance/`** - ✅ Created
- Purpose: Performance documentation, reports, analysis
- Contents:
- `README.md` - Directory overview
- `DEPENDENCIES.md` - Dependency documentation
- `*.html`, `*.json` - Generated reports (gitignored)
3. **`tests/load/results/`** - ✅ Created
- Purpose: k6 load test result storage
- Contents:
- `README.md` - Usage guide
- `.gitignore` - Ignore all results except docs
- All result files ignored by git
### Directory Structure
```
codebase-mcp/
├── performance_baselines/ # pytest-benchmark baselines (tracked)
│ ├── README.md
│ ├── .gitignore
│ └── connection_pool_baseline.json
│
├── docs/performance/ # Performance documentation (tracked)
│ ├── README.md
│ ├── DEPENDENCIES.md
│ ├── *.html # (gitignored - temporary reports)
│ └── *.json # (gitignored - temporary data)
│
└── tests/load/results/ # k6 results (not tracked)
├── README.md
├── .gitignore
└── * # (all result files gitignored)
```
### .gitignore Updates
Added comprehensive patterns to `/Users/cliffclarke/Claude_Code/codebase-mcp/.gitignore`:
```gitignore
# Performance Testing (Feature 011)
# Keep baseline files, ignore temporary results
tests/load/results/
docs/performance/*.html
docs/performance/*.json
!docs/performance/README.md
```
**Rationale**:
- **Baseline files** (`performance_baselines/*.json`) are **tracked** - regression testing reference
- **Load test results** (`tests/load/results/*`) are **ignored** - temporary CI/CD artifacts
- **Performance reports** (`docs/performance/*.html`) are **ignored** - can be regenerated
- **README files** are **tracked** - documentation is permanent

✓ tests/load/results/ exists
```
**Result**: All Python dependencies verified. k6 installation documented (not required for pytest benchmarks).
### Directory Verification
```bash
$ ls -d performance_baselines/ docs/performance/ tests/load/results/
docs/performance/
performance_baselines/
tests/load/results/
```
**Result**: ✅ All directories exist
### Git Status
```bash
$ git status --short
M .gitignore
?? docs/performance/
?? tests/load/
```
**Result**: New directories untracked (as expected), .gitignore modified
## Integration Points
### With Existing Infrastructure
- **performance_baselines/** - Created in task 009 (connection pool benchmarks)
- **pyproject.toml** - Dev dependencies already include all required packages
- **pytest.ini** - Already configured with `asyncio_mode = "auto"` and benchmark marker
### For Future Tasks
- **T006-T007** (Benchmark tests) - Use `pytest-benchmark` with `performance_baselines/`
- **T008-T011** (Load tests) - Use k6, store results in `tests/load/results/`
- **T012-T015** (Multi-client scenarios) - Documentation in `docs/performance/`
## Performance Targets (Reference)
From Constitutional Principle IV and spec:
- **Indexing**: <60s for 10,000 files
- **Search**: <500ms p95 latency
- **Connection pool**: <2s init, <10ms acquisition
## Constitutional Compliance
✅ **Principle IV (Performance Guarantees)**: Infrastructure for measuring <500ms search, <60s indexing
✅ **Principle VII (TDD)**: Benchmark testing infrastructure for regression protection
✅ **Principle VIII (Type Safety)**: Documentation includes type-safe usage examples
✅ **Principle X (Git Micro-Commit)**: Baselines tracked, temporary results ignored
✅ **Principle XI (FastMCP Foundation)**: httpx available for MCP protocol testing
## Next Steps
### Immediate (T006-T007)
1. Create benchmark test suites using `pytest-benchmark`
2. Generate initial baselines in `performance_baselines/`
3. Document baseline collection procedures
### Soon (T008-T011)
1. Install k6: `brew install k6` (macOS)
2. Create k6 test scripts in `tests/load/`
3. Generate load test reports in `tests/load/results/`
### Later (T012+)
1. Create multi-client scenario tests
2. Document performance analysis findings in `docs/performance/`
3. Set up CI/CD performance gates
## Notes
1. **No Python package installation needed** - All dependencies already in `pyproject.toml`
2. **k6 is optional** - Only needed for load testing (T008-T011), not benchmark tests (T006-T007)
3. **Directory structure reuses prior work** - `performance_baselines/` from task 009
4. **Incremental approach** - Can run benchmark tests now, add k6 later
