browser_youtube_transcript

Retrieve the transcript or captions of the YouTube video open in a browser tab, selecting language and format, to get timed or plain text for analysis.

Instructions

Transcript of the YouTube video open in the tab (the player's caption tracks, read in the page world: the only export that needs it).

lang: wanted language code ("fr", "en"...): manual track first, then auto-generated (track.auto: true), else YouTube's automatic translation (track.translated); omitted = the video's default track. format: "json3" (default) or "vtt". Response: timed_text ("[mm:ss] text" per line), text (plain text), track, available_tracks, title, channel, truncated (max_chars). If YouTube requires its player's token, the player's captions are turned on briefly then restored (enable_captions=False forbids it). Clear error if the video has no track.

TDQS

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Goes well beyond the annotations by disclosing a real side effect — that the player's captions may be turned on briefly and then restored — which explains why readOnlyHint is false despite being a read, and how to forbid that behavior. It also promises a 'clear error if the video has no track' and names the returned fields.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the purpose, then parameter semantics, then response shape — a sensible order. It is dense and the run-on phrasing ('else YouTube's automatic translation (track.translated); omitted = ...') takes a second read, but essentially every clause carries information.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 5-parameter, open-world tool with an output schema, the description still covers the response fields (timed_text, text, track, available_tracks, title, channel, truncated), the caption-toggling side effect, and the failure mode. Nothing an agent needs to invoke it correctly is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters5/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is only 20% (only tab_id is documented), so the description must carry the load, and it does: it defines lang's fallback semantics with examples ('fr', 'en'), format's two accepted values, and connects max_chars to the truncated response. This is substantial meaning beyond the bare schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Transcript of the YouTube video open in the tab') plus the mechanism ('the player's caption tracks, read in the page world'), so an agent knows immediately what it gets and how it differs from generic siblings like browser_content or browser_eval.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives concrete selection logic for the ambiguous choice (lang: manual track first, then auto-generated, then YouTube's automatic translation; omitted = default track) and names the escape hatch (enable_captions=False). It stops short of explicitly contrasting with sibling extraction tools such as browser_content, which is the only gap.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
