Ableton MCP Server

load_device_to_track

Load an Ableton device onto a track by specifying the track index and device name, adding instruments or effects to your Live Set.

Instructions

Load a device onto a track using the Extensions SDK browser API.

Side effects: mutates the track device chain via the Extension Host. Example: load_device_to_track(0, device_name="Operator") loads Operator on track 0. device_uri is retained as a deprecated alias for callers that still pass a query URI. Edge cases: requires the AbletonMCPServer Extension to be installed.

TDQS

A3.9/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description must carry the behavioral load, and it does disclose the key one: 'mutates the track device chain via the Extension Host,' plus the hard external dependency on the extension being installed. It stops short of stating error behavior, idempotency, or what happens to devices already in the chain.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded purpose sentence followed by clearly labeled 'Side effects', 'Example', and 'Edge cases' blocks, which makes scanning easy. The 'using the Extensions SDK browser API' clause is mildly redundant with the later Extension Host mention, but nothing is wasted overall.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

An output schema exists, so return values need not be explained, and the description covers the mutation semantics, an example call, the dependency requirement, and the deprecated parameter. For a mutating 3-parameter tool with no annotations, only failure/error behavior and parameter precedence remain unaddressed.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 0%, so the description must compensate: it clarifies device_name via the example, explains that device_uri is a deprecated alias, and shows track_index as a zero-based index. However, it never states precedence when both device_name and device_uri are supplied, or what happens if neither is provided.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb+resource ('Load a device onto a track') and names the mechanism (Extensions SDK browser API / Extension Host). It is clearly distinguishable from read-only siblings like get_device_list and list_device_params, which only inspect devices rather than load them.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Prerequisite is given ('requires the AbletonMCPServer Extension to be installed') and an example invocation implies usage, but there is no explicit when-to-use/when-not-to-use guidance and no named alternative (e.g., set_plugin_preset or live_find_device) for the case where you only want to locate or tweak an existing device.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
