photo_album

Destructive

Create, rename, or modify personal Synology Photos albums, including smart albums with conditions. Add or remove items, set covers, or copy albums without moving photos.

Instructions

Create or change a Synology Photos album: create one (normal, or smart: filled automatically from a condition), rename it, add or remove items, set its cover, copy it, or replace a smart album's condition. The photos themselves never move. Personal space albums only. To delete albums use delete_photo_albums; to share one, photo_share_link.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
idsNoPersonal space item IDs from list_photos, at most 1,000; exactly one for `set_cover`.
nameNoAlbum name for `create`, `create_smart`, `rename` and `copy`.
albumNoThe album to change; not for creates. Album ID (list_photo_collections type=album) or unique name.
actionYes`create` (`name`, optional `ids`), `create_smart` (`name`, `condition`), `rename` (`name`), `add` / `remove` (`ids`; normal albums), `set_cover` (one id in `ids`), `copy` (a normal album, into a new one named `name`) or `set_condition` (replaces a smart album's).
conditionNoAt least one of `folders` (IDs or paths), `people` (IDs or names), `tags` (names), `places` (place IDs), `start_date` / `end_date` (`YYYY-MM-DD`), `type` (`all`, `photo`, `video`), `ratings` (list of 0-5), `keywords`; `people_match`, `tags_match`, `keywords_match`: `any` (default) or `all`. Example: `{"tags": ["beach"], "start_date": "2024-01-01"}`.

TDQS

A4.4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare destructiveHint=true; the description adds the crucial nuance that item removal affects only album membership, not the underlying photos, and that set_condition *replaces* an existing smart album condition. It does not say whether operations are reversible or what error/permission conditions apply, but the mutation footprint is substantially clarified beyond the annotation.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The operation list comes first, followed by the scope constraint, then sibling routing — front-loaded with zero filler. Every clause carries information an agent would otherwise have to infer.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Covers scope, per-action semantics, the nested condition object's role, and sibling boundaries for a 5-parameter mutation tool with no output schema. The remaining gap is what an invocation returns (e.g., the new album's ID for create/copy), which matters because there is no output schema to fall back on.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so the action-to-parameter mapping the description implies is already spelled out per-property in the schema. The description adds no syntax, format, or constraint detail absent from the schema (the 1,000-item cap, set_cover's single id, and condition fields all live in schema descriptions). Baseline 3 is appropriate.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Names a specific resource (Synology Photos album) and enumerates the concrete operations it performs: create, create_smart, rename, add/remove items, set cover, copy, set_condition. It also disambiguates from siblings by naming delete_photo_albums and photo_share_link as the tools for deletion and sharing, so an agent can pick the right tool without opening any schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly routes two adjacent jobs elsewhere ('To delete albums use delete_photo_albums; to share one, photo_share_link') and states a hard scope boundary ('Personal space albums only'). The 'photos themselves never move' line also tells the agent this is not a substitute for move_photos, which is the most likely confusion given the add/remove vocabulary.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
