sms_numbers_write

Destructive

Manage an agent's SMS numbers by removing or assigning rented numbers, releasing rentals, and sending test SMS messages to verify connectivity.

Instructions

Manage the SMS numbers of an agent. Connecting your own Twilio account and paying for a rented number are done on the dashboard (they need credentials / card details that must not go through chat). test_send sends a real SMS. Actions: remove — disconnect an SMS number from the agent Needs: phoneNumber. | assign_rental — attach an already-rented platform number to the agent Needs: phoneNumber. | release_rental — give up the rented number of the agent (it stops working; confirm first) | test_send — send a test SMS from the agent number Needs: testPhoneNumber.

TDQS

A4.1/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Beyond the annotations (destructiveHint=true, openWorldHint=true), the description specifies which action is destructive and why ('it stops working'), that test_send sends a real SMS, and that certain setup steps require out-of-band credentials. It leaves open whether remove is reversible and whether release_rental can be undone by re-assigning.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Scoping caveats (dashboard-only setup) are front-loaded, then actions are listed in a scannable format with per-action requirements inline. No sentence is filler.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 4-action, 6-parameter mutation tool with no output schema, the description covers what each action does, which parameters each needs, and the destructive/real-world side effects. It omits return behavior for test_send and any error/edge conditions (e.g., number not currently attached).

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 67%, but the schema has no per-action conditionality; the description supplies it by mapping phoneNumber to remove/assign_rental and testPhoneNumber to test_send, which is real added meaning. It says nothing about `mode` or what `message` does beyond the schema's own 'For test_send (optional)' note.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description names the resource (SMS numbers of an agent) and enumerates four concrete actions with a one-line definition each (remove, assign_rental, release_rental, test_send), which is far more specific than the title alone. It stops short of distinguishing itself from adjacent siblings like sms_numbers_read or release_twilio_number/import_twilio_number, which a reader must infer.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It draws explicit when-not boundaries: connecting your own Twilio account or renting a number must happen on the dashboard because credentials/card details cannot go through chat, and release_rental carries a 'confirm first' instruction. It does not, however, route the agent to alternatives such as sms_numbers_read for listing or release_twilio_number for platform-level release.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
