# PGLite Database Integration - MECE Fix Plan ## 1. Database Initialization Architecture ### 1.1 Storage Strategy - **Replace file:// with idb:// for browser compatibility** - Current approach using `file://${dataDir}` fails in most contexts - Implement IndexedDB approach as primary persistence strategy: `idb://research-agent-db` - Add configuration option in `.env` to select storage strategy ### 1.2 Initialization Pattern - **Modernize PGLite instantiation** - Use async `PGlite.create()` pattern instead of constructor - Properly implement extension loading with vector support - Add relaxed durability mode option for better performance - Add fallback chain for different storage backends ### 1.3 Environment Detection - **Add runtime environment detection** - Detect if running in Node.js vs browser environment - Use appropriate filesystem based on environment - Implement appropriate initialization path for each context ## 2. Error Handling and Recovery ### 2.1 Initialization Failures - **Implement graceful degradation for DB failures** - Add multi-stage initialization with fallbacks - Create in-memory fallback when persistent storage fails - Log detailed diagnostics about failure reasons - Add self-healing retry mechanism ### 2.2 Operation Failures - **Enhance error handling for database operations** - Add specific error types for different failure modes - Create operation-level recovery strategies - Implement circuit breaker for repeated failures - Add detailed logging with recovery actions ### 2.3 Cache Integration - **Use cache as primary with DB as backup** - Ensure in-memory cache works regardless of DB status - Add asynchronous DB persistence that doesn't block operations - Implement read-through/write-through patterns - Set up proper cache invalidation with DB sync ## 3. Implementation Updates ### 3.1 Core Database Client - **Refactor dbClient.js implementation** - Create a DB provider class with better encapsulation - Separate connection management from data operations - Add state management for connection status - Implement retry mechanisms with exponential backoff ### 3.2 API Modernization - **Update to latest PGLite patterns** - Replace `exec()` with `query()` when parameters are used - Use proper parameter binding - Use recommended transaction patterns - Implement proper vector operations for embeddings ### 3.3 Configuration Integration - **Update configuration management** - Add storage-specific configuration options - Support multiple persistence strategies - Create documentation for configuration options - Allow runtime reconfiguration ## 4. Testing Strategy ### 4.1 Unit Testing - **Create dedicated database test suite** - Test each storage backend separately - Add mock for database operations - Test fallback mechanisms - Verify embedding and vector search ### 4.2 Integration Testing - **Develop comprehensive integration tests** - Test full research flow with database integration - Test recovery from simulated failures - Benchmark performance with different configurations - Test cache and database synchronization ### 4.3 Environment Testing - **Validate across environments** - Test in Node.js environment - Test in browser environment if appropriate - Test with actual PGLite initialization - Test with mocked database layer ## 5. Implementation Plan ### 5.1 Phase 1: Immediate Fixes (1-2 days) 1. **Fix initialization pattern** - Update storage URL to use `idb://` scheme - Implement proper async initialization - Add graceful fallback to in-memory database - Add clear error reporting 2. **Enhance error handling** - Wrap all database operations in try/catch - Add retries for transient failures - Improve logging of database errors - Ensure operations don't fail critically ### 5.2 Phase 2: Architecture Improvements (3-5 days) 1. **Refactor database client** - Create provider class architecture - Separate concerns more clearly - Improve state management - Add proper lifecycle hooks 2. **Update API usage** - Modernize query patterns - Implement proper transaction support - Update vector operations - Add database health monitoring ### 5.3 Phase 3: Testing and Validation (2-3 days) 1. **Create comprehensive test suite** - Unit tests for database operations - Integration tests for research flow - Failure recovery tests - Performance benchmarks 2. **Documentation updates** - Update configuration documentation - Create database troubleshooting guide - Document fallback behaviors - Update deployment considerations
