# Alert System Documentation
## Overview
The alert system monitors API usage patterns and triggers alerts based on configurable thresholds. It provides real-time monitoring, alert management, and historical analysis capabilities.
## Alert Types
### 1. Response Time Alerts
- **Description**: Monitors API endpoint response times
- **Thresholds**:
- Warning: > 1.0 seconds
- Critical: > 2.0 seconds
- **Data Points**: Average response time over 5-minute window
### 2. Error Rate Alerts
- **Description**: Tracks the percentage of failed API requests
- **Thresholds**:
- Warning: > 5% error rate
- Critical: > 10% error rate
- **Data Points**: Error rate calculated over 100 requests
### 3. Usage Spike Alerts
- **Description**: Detects sudden increases in API usage
- **Thresholds**:
- Warning: > 50% increase
- Critical: > 100% increase
- **Data Points**: Request count compared to 24-hour average
### 4. Unauthorized Access Alerts
- **Description**: Monitors failed authentication attempts
- **Thresholds**:
- Warning: > 10 failed attempts per hour
- Critical: > 50 failed attempts per hour
- **Data Points**: Failed authentication count per hour
## Alert Lifecycle
1. **Creation**
- Triggered when a metric exceeds its threshold
- Initial status: `active`
- Includes timestamp and relevant metrics
2. **Acknowledgment**
- User acknowledges the alert
- Status changes to `acknowledged`
- Records acknowledgment timestamp and user
3. **Resolution**
- User marks alert as resolved
- Status changes to `resolved`
- Records resolution timestamp and user
## Alert Management
### User Interface
The alert management interface provides:
1. **Filtering Options**
- Alert type
- Severity level
- Time range
- Status
2. **Statistics Dashboard**
- Active alerts count
- Warning alerts count
- Critical alerts count
- Resolved alerts today
3. **Alert Tables**
- Active alerts with actions
- Alert history with status
4. **Alert Details**
- Basic information
- Metrics
- Timeline
- Action buttons
### API Endpoints
1. **GET /api/v1/alerts**
- List active alerts
- Supports filtering
- Returns paginated results
2. **GET /api/v1/alerts/history**
- List historical alerts
- Supports filtering
- Returns paginated results
3. **GET /api/v1/alerts/{alert_id}**
- Get alert details
- Includes metrics and timeline
4. **POST /api/v1/alerts/{alert_id}/acknowledge**
- Acknowledge an alert
- Updates status and timestamp
5. **PUT /api/v1/alerts/{alert_id}**
- Update alert status
- Supports resolution
6. **GET /api/v1/alerts/settings**
- Get current alert thresholds
- Returns all configuration
7. **PUT /api/v1/alerts/settings**
- Update alert thresholds
- Validates new values
## Configuration
### Threshold Settings
```json
{
"response_time": {
"warning": 1.0,
"critical": 2.0
},
"error_rate": {
"warning": 5.0,
"critical": 10.0
},
"usage_spike": {
"warning": 50.0,
"critical": 100.0
}
}
```
### Environment Variables
- `ALERT_CHECK_INTERVAL`: Time between alert checks (default: 300 seconds)
- `ALERT_RETENTION_DAYS`: Days to keep alert history (default: 90)
- `ALERT_NOTIFICATION_ENABLED`: Enable email notifications (default: false)
## Best Practices
1. **Threshold Configuration**
- Start with conservative values
- Monitor and adjust based on patterns
- Consider business hours and patterns
2. **Alert Management**
- Acknowledge alerts promptly
- Document resolution steps
- Review alert patterns regularly
3. **Performance Considerations**
- Use appropriate time windows
- Consider data aggregation
- Monitor system impact
## Troubleshooting
### Common Issues
1. **False Positives**
- Check threshold settings
- Review time windows
- Consider seasonal patterns
2. **Missing Alerts**
- Verify monitoring is active
- Check log levels
- Review alert rules
3. **Performance Impact**
- Monitor system resources
- Adjust check intervals
- Optimize queries
### Debugging Steps
1. Check alert logs
2. Verify threshold settings
3. Review recent changes
4. Monitor system metrics
## Integration
### Webhook Notifications
Configure webhooks to receive alert notifications:
```json
{
"url": "https://your-webhook-url",
"events": ["alert_created", "alert_acknowledged", "alert_resolved"],
"secret": "your-webhook-secret"
}
```
### API Integration
Example API usage:
```python
# Get active alerts
response = requests.get(
"https://api.example.com/v1/alerts",
headers={"Authorization": "Bearer your-token"}
)
# Acknowledge alert
response = requests.post(
"https://api.example.com/v1/alerts/123/acknowledge",
headers={"Authorization": "Bearer your-token"}
)
```
## Security Considerations
1. **Access Control**
- Role-based permissions
- API key validation
- Rate limiting
