## π Grok API Connection Guide
### β οΈ IMPORTANT: Model Update
**As of November 2025**, X.AI has deprecated `grok-beta`. You **MUST** use `grok-3` instead.
- β Old: `model: grok-beta` (DEPRECATED - will fail with 404 error)
- β
New: `model: grok-3` (Current model)
MCPM v6.0+ has been updated to use `grok-3` automatically. If you're using an older version, update your `fgd_config.yaml`:
```yaml
llm:
providers:
grok:
model: grok-3 # Change from grok-beta to grok-3
```
### Prerequisites
- Grok API account at [x.ai](https://x.ai/)
- Valid API key from your X.AI account
- XAI_API_KEY environment variable set
- Internet connection to reach `api.x.ai/v1`
### Step 1: Get Your Grok API Key
1. **Visit X.AI**: Go to [https://x.ai/](https://x.ai/)
2. **Sign Up/Login**: Create account or log in
3. **Get API Key**:
- Navigate to API settings
- Generate new API key
- Copy the key (it starts with `xai-` prefix typically)
4. **Save Securely**: Store it in a safe location
### Step 2: Configure MCPM
#### Option A: Using .env File (Recommended)
Create `.env` file in your MCPM root directory:
```env
# Required for Grok provider
XAI_API_KEY=xai_your_actual_api_key_here
# Optional: Other providers
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-your-openai-key
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-your-anthropic-key
```
#### Option B: Using Environment Variables
**Windows (Command Prompt):**
```cmd
set XAI_API_KEY=xai_your_actual_api_key_here
python gui_main_pro.py
```
**Windows (PowerShell):**
```powershell
$env:XAI_API_KEY = "xai_your_actual_api_key_here"
python gui_main_pro.py
```
**Linux/Mac:**
```bash
export XAI_API_KEY="xai_your_actual_api_key_here"
python gui_main_pro.py
```
### Step 3: Start MCPM
```bash
# GUI Mode (Recommended)
python gui_main_pro.py
# Or direct backend mode
python mcp_backend.py fgd_config.yaml
```
### Step 4: Verify Connection
The GUI will show:
- **Connection Status**: "π’ Running on grok" (green indicator)
- **Log Output**: "Grok API Key present: True"
- **Model Info**: "grok-3" model should be displayed
### Troubleshooting Grok Connection
#### Problem: "XAI_API_KEY not set" Error
**Cause**: Environment variable not found
**Solutions**:
1. Check `.env` file exists and has correct key:
```bash
cat .env # Linux/Mac
type .env # Windows
```
2. Verify key format (should start with `xai-`):
```python
import os
print(os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY"))
```
3. Restart Python/GUI after setting variable:
- Changes to environment variables require restart
- `.env` file changes are picked up automatically
#### Problem: "Grok API Error 401: Unauthorized"
**Cause**: Invalid or expired API key
**Solutions**:
1. Check API key is correct (no spaces, proper prefix)
2. Regenerate key from X.AI dashboard
3. Verify key is still active (check account settings)
4. Test API key directly:
```bash
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer xai_YOUR_KEY" \
https://api.x.ai/v1/models
```
#### Problem: "Grok API Error 429: Rate Limited"
**Cause**: Too many requests in short time
**Solutions**:
1. Wait 1-2 minutes before retrying
2. Check request limit on your account
3. Upgrade X.AI account if needed
4. Reduce concurrent queries
#### Problem: "ConnectionError" or "Timeout"
**Cause**: Network connectivity issue
**Solutions**:
1. Check internet connection: `ping api.x.ai`
2. Check firewall/proxy settings
3. Verify API endpoint is reachable:
```bash
curl -I https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions
```
4. Check X.AI service status
#### Problem: GUI Shows "Connected" But Grok Doesn't Respond
**Cause**: Backend started but API call failing silently
**Solutions**:
1. Check logs for actual error:
```bash
tail -f fgd_server.log # Backend logs
tail -f mcpm_gui.log # GUI logs
```
2. Verify in logs:
- "Grok API Key present: True"
- No "API Error" messages
- No timeout warnings
3. Test with simple query in GUI
4. Check model name matches config: `grok-3`
### Command List: Using Grok via MCPM GUI
#### 1. **Start Server**
- Click **"Browse"** to select project folder
- Select **"grok"** from provider dropdown
- Click **"βΆοΈ Start Server"** button
- Wait for **"π’ Running on grok"** status
#### 2. **Query Grok**
In MCP clients or tools that support the `llm_query` tool:
```json
{
"tool": "llm_query",
"arguments": {
"prompt": "Your question here",
"provider": "grok"
}
}
```
#### 3. **Use File Context**
Query with file context automatically included:
```json
{
"tool": "llm_query",
"arguments": {
"prompt": "Analyze this code: read_file(src/main.py)",
"provider": "grok"
}
}
```
#### 4. **Store & Recall Information**
Remember something from Grok response:
```json
{
"tool": "remember",
"arguments": {
"key": "grok_solution",
"value": "Solution from Grok response",
"category": "llm"
}
}
```
Recall it later:
```json
{
"tool": "recall",
"arguments": {
"category": "llm"
}
}
```
#### 5. **Search Project Files**
```json
{
"tool": "search_in_files",
"arguments": {
"query": "TODO",
"pattern": "**/*.py"
}
}
```
#### 6. **List Files**
```json
{
"tool": "list_files",
"arguments": {
"pattern": "**/*.py"
}
}
```
### REST API: Direct Grok Queries
If using FastAPI wrapper (`python server.py`):
```bash
# Start FastAPI server
python server.py
# Query Grok
curl -X POST http://localhost:8456/api/llm_query \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{
"prompt": "What is machine learning?",
"provider": "grok"
}'
```
### Configuration File Settings
Edit `fgd_config.yaml` for Grok-specific settings:
```yaml
llm:
default_provider: grok
providers:
grok:
model: grok-3 # Model version
base_url: https://api.x.ai/v1 # API endpoint
timeout: 60 # Request timeout in seconds
```
### Best Practices
1. **API Key Security**:
- Never commit `.env` to git
- Use `.gitignore` to exclude it
- Rotate keys periodically
2. **Rate Limiting**:
- Keep queries < 4000 tokens
- Space out multiple requests
- Check X.AI account limits
3. **Error Handling**:
- Always check logs (`fgd_server.log`)
- Retry with exponential backoff (built-in)
- Graceful fallback to other providers
4. **Context Management**:
- Limit context window to 20 items (configurable)
- Archive old memories with LRU pruning
- Clean up unnecessary file changes
### FAQ
**Q: How do I know if Grok is actually connected?**
A: Check `fgd_server.log` for the line:
```
Grok API Key present: True
MCP Server starting with configuration:
LLM Provider: grok
```
**Q: Can I use multiple providers simultaneously?**
A: No, only one default provider. Switch by selecting different provider in GUI or setting `default_provider` in config.
**Q: What if my API key expires?**
A: Generate new key on X.AI dashboard and update `.env` file.
**Q: How much does Grok API cost?**
A: Check [X.AI pricing](https://x.ai/) - pricing structure varies by tier.
**Q: Can I self-host the backend?**
A: Yes, `mcp_backend.py` runs locally. It only needs internet for Grok API calls.
