# Session Tracking Integration Test Report
**Report Date**: 2025-02-06
**Component**: Session-Buddy + Mahavishnu Integration
**Test Type**: End-to-End Integration Test
**Status**: Ready for Testing
## Executive Summary
This report documents the end-to-end integration testing strategy for session tracking between Session-Buddy and Mahavishnu. The session tracking feature allows Mahavishnu's admin shell to record session lifecycle events (start/end) in Session-Buddy's database via MCP protocol.
## Architecture Overview
### Components
1. **Mahavishnu Shell** (`mahavishnu/shell/adapter.py`)
- Extends Oneiric's `AdminShell` class
- Uses `SessionEventEmitter` for session tracking
- Tracks admin shell sessions with metadata
2. **SessionEventEmitter** (`oneiric/shell/session_tracker.py`)
- Emits session lifecycle events
- Connects to Session-Buddy MCP server
- Sends session start/end events
3. **Session-Buddy MCP Server** (`session-buddy/`)
- MCP server exposing session tracking tools
- Receives session events via MCP protocol
- Stores sessions in DuckDB database
### Data Flow
```
User starts Mahavishnu shell
↓
MahavishnuShell.__init__()
↓
SessionEventEmitter initialized
↓
Shell banner displayed with "Session Tracking: ✓ Enabled"
↓
SessionEventEmitter emits session_start event
↓
Session-Buddy MCP receives track_session_start call
↓
Session record created in DuckDB
↓
... shell session active ...
↓
User exits shell (exit())
↓
SessionEventEmitter emits session_end event
↓
Session-Buddy MCP receives track_session_end call
↓
Session record updated with end_time and duration
```
## Test Strategy

### Phase 1: Preparation (5 minutes)
```bash
# 1. Verify all packages installed
pip show session-buddy oneiric mahavishnu
# 2. Check Session-Buddy server
lsof -i :8678
# 3. If not running, start server
cd /Users/les/Projects/session-buddy
export SESSION_BUDDY_SECRET="$(python -c 'import secrets; print(secrets.token_urlsafe(32))')"
session-buddy mcp start > /tmp/session-buddy-mcp.log 2>&1 &
```
### Phase 2: Automated Tests (2 minutes)
```bash
# Run automated test suite
cd /Users/les/Projects/session-buddy
python test_session_tracking_integration.py
```
**Expected Output**:
- All automated tests pass
- Test results saved to `test_results.json`
### Phase 3: Manual Shell Test (5 minutes)
```bash
# 1. Start Mahavishnu shell
cd /Users/les/Projects/mahavishnu
python -m mahavishnu shell
# 2. Check banner for "Session Tracking: ✓ Enabled"
# 3. Exit shell
exit()
# 4. Verify session recorded
session-buddy list-sessions --type admin_shell
```
### Phase 4: Database Verification (2 minutes)
```bash
# 1. Get most recent session ID
SESSION_ID=$(session-buddy list-sessions --type admin_shell | head -1 | awk '{print $1}')
# 2. Show session details
session-buddy show-session $SESSION_ID
# 3. Verify metadata
session-buddy show-session $SESSION_ID | grep -A 20 "metadata"
```

## Known Issues and Limitations
### Current Limitations
1. **No Automated Shell Testing**
- Shell requires interactive input
- Cannot automate full lifecycle test
- Manual testing required
2. **MCP Connection Latency**
- Session events may be delayed
- Depends on network/localhost performance
- May affect session start_time accuracy
3. **Database Locking**
- DuckDB may lock during writes
- Multiple concurrent sessions may conflict
- Consider connection pooling
### Potential Issues
1. **Oneiric Dependency**
- Session tracking depends on Oneiric's AdminShell
- Changes to Oneiric may break integration
- Version compatibility must be maintained
2. **Port Conflicts**
- Default port 8678 may be in use
- Need configurable port in settings
- Consider port auto-selection
3. **Session Metadata Completeness**
- Some metadata fields may be missing
- Depends on Mahavishnu configuration
- May need default values
## Troubleshooting Guide
### Issue: Session Tracking Disabled
**Symptoms**: Banner shows "Session Tracking: ✗ Disabled"
**Root Cause**: Session tracking disabled in config
**Solution**:
```yaml
# settings/mahavishnu.yaml
session:
enabled: true
```
### Issue: Session Not Recorded
**Symptoms**: Session doesn't appear in database
**Root Cause**: MCP connection failed
**Solution**:
```bash
# Check server status
session-buddy mcp status
# Check logs
tail -f /tmp/session-buddy-mcp.log
# Restart server
kill $(lsof -ti:8678)
session-buddy mcp start
```
### Issue: Missing Metadata
**Symptoms**: Session metadata incomplete
**Root Cause**: SessionEventEmitter not initialized
**Solution**:
```bash
# Check Mahavishnu shell initialization
python -c "from mahavishnu.shell import MahavishnuShell; print('OK')"
# Check Oneiric AdminShell
python -c "from oneiric.shell import AdminShell; print('OK')"
# Reinstall packages if needed
pip install -e /Users/les/Projects/oneiric
pip install -e /Users/les/Projects/mahavishnu
```
