## Timeline
### 10:50 AM - Coverage Gap Analysis
**Action**: Ran comprehensive coverage report to identify uncovered lines
```bash
pnpm run test:coverage
```
**Findings**:
- `src/tools/unified.ts:884` - Host not found error in image pull
- `src/tools/unified.ts:894` - Host not found error in image build
- `src/tools/unified.ts:909` - Host not found error in image remove
- `src/tools/unified.ts:917` - Unknown image subaction default case
- `src/tools/unified.ts:804` - Host not found error in docker prune
- `src/tools/unified.ts:815` - Error handling in docker prune operation
- `src/tools/unified.ts:836` - Unknown docker subaction default case
- `src/tools/unified.ts:767` - Host not found error in docker df
### 10:51 AM - Gap Identification
**Analysis**: Identified 3 categories of missing coverage:
1. **Host validation errors**: Image pull/build/remove, docker df/prune
2. **Error recovery paths**: Docker prune error handling
3. **Schema validation**: Unknown subaction edge cases
### 10:52 AM - Test Implementation (Image Actions)
**File**: `src/tools/unified.integration.test.ts`
Added 3 tests for image action host validation:
- Line 1346-1356: Test for host not found in image pull
- Line 1383-1393: Test for host not found in image build
- Line 1418-1428: Test for host not found in image remove
**Result**: All tests passed, 81 total tests
### 10:52 AM - Schema Validation Edge Case
**Issue Discovered**: Unknown subaction test was checking for exception throw, but schema validation returns error response instead
**Fix**: Changed test assertion from `rejects.toThrow()` to check for error response with `isError: true`
- Line 1432-1441: Fixed test for unknown image subaction validation
### 10:53 AM - Docker Action Gap Filling
**File**: `src/tools/unified.integration.test.ts`
Added 3 tests for docker action coverage:
- Line 1235-1246: Test for host not found in docker prune
- Line 1248-1264: Test for error handling during prune operation
- Line 1265-1274: Test for unknown docker subaction validation
- Line 1087-1096: Test for host not found in docker df
**Key Discovery**: Prune error handling catches exceptions and wraps them gracefully with 0 items deleted, rather than re-throwing. Updated test assertion to check for graceful degradation.
### 10:54 AM - Final Coverage Verification
```bash
pnpm run test:coverage
```
**Results**:
- Statement Coverage: **90.2%** (target: 80%) ✓
- Branch Coverage: **75%** (target: 60%) ✓
- Line Coverage: **92.42%**
- Tests: **84 passing + 1 skipped**
**Remaining Uncovered Lines** (4 lines - all unreachable defensive code):
- Line 602: `throw new Error(\`Unknown compose subaction\`)`
- Line 732: `throw new Error(\`Unknown host subaction\`)`
- Line 836: `throw new Error(\`Unknown docker subaction\`)`
- Line 917: `throw new Error(\`Unknown image subaction\`)`
**Why Unreachable**: Discriminated union schema validation catches invalid subactions before default cases are reached.

## Key Findings
### 1. Schema Validation Prevents Default Cases (unified.ts:602,732,836,917)
**Discovery**: All `default:` case throws in action routing switches are unreachable because the Zod discriminated union schema validates `action:subaction` combinations before the routing logic executes.
**Technical Detail**: The `UnifiedToolSchema` uses composite discriminator `action_subaction` which constructs all valid combinations (e.g., "container:list", "image:pull"). Invalid combinations are rejected at schema level with detailed error messages.
**Implication**: These throws are defensive programming for type safety but can't be reached in practice. Coverage report shows them as uncovered, but they serve as compile-time exhaustiveness checks.
### 2. Prune Error Handling is Graceful (unified.ts:814-825)
**Discovery**: Docker prune operations catch errors and wrap them in result objects rather than re-throwing.
**Code Pattern**:
```typescript
try {
const results = await pruneDocker(host, params.prune_target);
allResults.push({ host: host.name, results });
} catch (error) {
allResults.push({
host: host.name,
results: [{
type: params.prune_target,
spaceReclaimed: 0,
itemsDeleted: 0,
details: [`Error: ${error.message}`]
}]
});
}
```
**Implication**: Errors during prune don't fail the entire operation - they return success with 0 items deleted. This enables partial success in multi-host scenarios.
### 3. Host Validation Consistency (unified.ts:767,804,884,894,909)
**Pattern**: All actions requiring a host parameter follow consistent validation:
```typescript
const targetHost = hosts.find((h) => h.name === params.host);
if (!targetHost) {
return errorResponse(`Host '${params.host}' not found.`);
}
```
**Coverage Gap**: Initial tests didn't systematically test this path for every action. Phase 7 added tests for all missing host validation paths.
### 4. Test Count Progression
**Complete Timeline**:
- Phase 1 (Container): 0 → 12 tests
- Phase 2 (Compose): 12 → 24 tests
- Phase 3 (Docker): 24 → 36 tests
- Phase 4 (Image): 36 → 48 tests
- Phase 5 (Formats): 48 → 60 tests
- Phase 6 (Edge Cases): 60 → 77 tests
- **Phase 7 (Gap Filling): 77 → 84 tests**
## Technical Decisions
### Decision 1: Target Coverage Levels
**Choice**: 80% statement, 60% branch coverage
**Reasoning**:
- Industry standard for integration tests
- Allows for some unreachable defensive code
- Focuses effort on meaningful coverage over 100% perfection
- Balances thoroughness with practical development velocity
**Outcome**: Exceeded targets with 90.2%/75% coverage
### Decision 2: Mock Strategy
**Choice**: Module-level mocking of services, realistic mock data
**Reasoning**:
- Fast test execution (~1.4s for 84 tests)
- Deterministic behavior (no external dependencies)
- Service boundaries already well-defined
- Real Docker integration would be slow and fragile
**Implementation**:
```typescript
vi.mock("../services/docker.js");
vi.mock("../services/compose.js");
vi.mock("../services/ssh.js");
```
### Decision 3: Error Test Priority
**Choice**: Systematically test all "host not found" paths
**Reasoning**:
- User-facing error paths are critical for UX
- Easy to miss during happy-path testing
- Consistent error messaging improves debugging
- Low-hanging fruit for coverage improvement
**Result**: Added 5 host validation tests in Phase 7
### Decision 4: Unreachable Code Documentation
**Choice**: Document why lines are uncovered rather than forcing artificial coverage
**Reasoning**:
- Defensive code serves compile-time purpose
- Attempting to bypass schema validation would be anti-pattern
- Coverage report needs explanation for maintainers
- 90.2% is excellent coverage; pursuing 100% has diminishing returns
**Documentation**: Created dedicated section in coverage doc explaining unreachable lines

## Test Implementation Details
### Test Pattern Used
All 7 new tests follow this pattern:
```typescript
describe("action: subaction", () => {
it("should return error for unknown host in <subaction>", async () => {
const result = (await toolHandler({
action: "<action>",
subaction: "<subaction>",
// ... required params
host: "nonexistent-host"
})) as { content: Array<{ text: string }> };
expect(result.isError).toBe(true);
expect(result.content[0].text).toContain("Host 'nonexistent-host' not found");
});
});
```
### Special Cases
1. **Prune Error Handling** (unique pattern):
- Mocks `pruneDocker` to reject with error
- Asserts graceful degradation (0 items deleted)
- Tests that error doesn't bubble up as isError
2. **Unknown Subaction** (schema validation):
- Uses `as any` to bypass TypeScript checking
- Asserts error response (not exception)
- Checks for "Invalid discriminator value" message
## Coverage Metrics Deep Dive

- Run coverage report before each commit
## Lessons Learned
### What Worked Extremely Well
1. **Coverage-Driven Testing**: Using coverage report to identify gaps was surgical and efficient
2. **Systematic Error Testing**: Testing all host validation paths caught real edge cases
3. **Realistic Mocks**: Mock data matching real API responses made tests meaningful
4. **Documentation First**: Writing coverage doc before moving plan helped capture context
### Challenges and Solutions
| Challenge | Solution |
|-----------|----------|
| Schema validation makes default cases unreachable | Document as defensive code, don't force coverage |
| Error wrapping vs re-throwing | Test actual behavior (graceful degradation) not assumptions |
| Unknown subaction testing | Use schema validation errors instead of runtime throws |
| Coverage gaps unclear | Use sed to inspect specific lines, understand context |
### Testing Anti-Patterns Avoided
- ✗ Testing implementation details instead of behavior
- ✗ Asserting "doesn't throw" without checking output
- ✗ Copying test patterns without understanding coverage gaps
- ✗ Forcing artificial coverage of unreachable code
- ✗ Skipping documentation of uncovered code
### Best Practices Confirmed
- ✓ Read coverage HTML reports to understand gaps
- ✓ Test one uncovered line at a time
- ✓ Verify coverage improved after each test
- ✓ Document why code is uncovered if intentional
- ✓ Use explicit assertions (not just "works")
