# Phase 3 Implementation Summary ## Overview Phase 3 focused on enhancing the Bruno MCP Server with configuration management, security hardening, and performance optimizations. This document summarizes what was implemented and tested. --- ## Phase 3.1 - Configuration System ✅ COMPLETE ### Implementation Details **Files Created:** - `src/config.ts` (258 lines) - Complete configuration management system - `bruno-mcp.config.json` - Active configuration file - `bruno-mcp.config.example.json` - Example configuration template - `test-config.js` - Configuration testing script **Features Implemented:** 1. **Schema-Based Configuration** (Zod validation) - Strict type checking for all configuration values - Default values for optional settings - Range validation (e.g., timeout 1000-300000ms) 2. **Multi-Location Configuration Loading** - Environment variable: `BRUNO_MCP_CONFIG` - Current working directory: `./bruno-mcp.config.json` - Home directory: `~/.bruno-mcp.config.json` 3. **Configuration Options** - `brunoCliPath` - Custom Bruno CLI path - `brunoHome` - Bruno home directory - `timeout` - Request and collection timeouts - `retry` - Retry configuration with backoff strategies - `security` - Path restrictions and secret masking - `logging` - Log levels and formats - `performance` - Caching configuration 4. **Secret Masking Utility** - Pattern-based detection (password, api_key, token, etc.) - Configurable patterns - Applied to error messages and logs 5. **Runtime Configuration Updates** - `updateConfig()` method for dynamic changes - Getter methods for specific config sections - Singleton pattern for global access ### Test Results ``` ✅ Test 1: Loading configuration ✅ Test 2: Configuration values display ✅ Test 3: Secret masking ✅ Test 4: Runtime configuration update All configuration tests passed (4/4) ``` --- ## Phase 3.2 - Security Enhancements ✅ COMPLETE (3/4) ### Implementation Details **Files Created:** - `src/security.ts` (248 lines) - Comprehensive security utilities - `test-security.js` - Security validation testing script **Features Implemented:** 1. **Path Validation** - Prevents directory traversal attacks - Validates against allowed paths (if configured) - Checks file existence - Absolute path resolution 2. **Input Sanitization** - Removes dangerous characters: `; & | \` $ ( ) { } [ ] < > \\` - Safe for shell execution - Applied to all user inputs 3. **Environment Variable Validation** - Name validation (alphanumeric + underscore only) - Value validation (prevents command injection) - Detects dangerous patterns: - Command injection: `; & | \`` - Variable expansion: `${...}` - Command substitution: `$(...)` - Backtick execution: `` `...` `` 4. **Request/Folder Name Validation** - Prevents path traversal attempts (`..`) - Blocks absolute paths - Rejects null bytes 5. **Comprehensive Tool Parameter Validation** - Integrated into all MCP tool handlers - Returns detailed errors and warnings - Security event logging 6. **Secret Masking in Errors** - Masks secrets in error messages and stack traces - Uses configured patterns - Prevents credential leakage 7. **Security Event Logging** - Logs access denials - Logs validation warnings - Respects configured log level ### Test Results ``` ✅ Test 1: Valid collection path ✅ Test 2: Path traversal prevention ✅ Test 3: Valid request name ✅ Test 4: Request name with traversal ✅ Test 5: Valid folder path ✅ Test 6: Folder path with traversal ✅ Test 7: Valid environment variables ✅ Test 8: Environment variable with command injection ✅ Test 9: Comprehensive parameter validation (valid) ✅ Test 10: Comprehensive parameter validation (invalid path) ✅ Test 11: Comprehensive parameter validation (invalid request) ✅ Test 12: Secret masking in error messages ✅ Test 13: Security event logging All security tests passed (13/13) ``` ### Pending Item - [ ] Add optional sandbox mode for untrusted collections (32) --- ## Phase 3.3 - Performance & Caching ✅ COMPLETE (3/4) ### Implementation Details **Files Created:** - `src/performance.ts` (379 lines) - Caching and metrics system - `test-health.js` - Health check tool testing script **Features Implemented:** 1. **In-Memory Cache with TTL** - Generic `Cache<T>` class - Configurable TTL (default: 5 minutes) - Automatic cleanup of expired entries - Hit tracking for statistics 2. **Request List Caching** - Caches `bruno_list_requests` results - Reduces file system operations - Configurable via `performance.cacheEnabled` - Cache invalidation methods 3. **Performance Manager Singleton** - Global performance tracking - Cache management - Metrics aggregation 4. **Execution Metrics Tracking** - Records timing for all tool executions - Tracks success/failure rates - Per-tool statistics - Keeps last 1000 metrics 5. **Metrics Summary** - Total executions - Overall success rate - Average duration - Per-tool breakdowns with: - Execution count - Success rate - Average duration 6. **Health Check Tool** (`bruno_health_check`) - Server status and version info - Bruno CLI availability check - Configuration display - Optional performance metrics (`includeMetrics: true`) - Optional cache statistics (`includeCacheStats: true`) - Node.js and platform information - Server uptime 7. **Integration** - Integrated caching into `BrunoCLI.listRequests()` - Cache hit logging - Performance metrics for all tools (ready for future use) ### Test Results **Health Check Tests:** ``` ✅ Test 1: Basic health check (no metrics) ✅ Test 2: Health check with performance metrics ✅ Test 3: Health check with cache statistics ✅ Test 4: Health check with all options All health check tests passed (4/4) ``` **MCP Integration Tests:** ``` ✅ Test 1: List Available Tools (4 tools found) ✅ Test 2: List Requests in Collection ✅ Test 3: Run Single Request ✅ Test 4: Run Entire Collection ✅ Test 5: Run Request with Environment All MCP tests passed (5/5) ``` ### Health Check Output Example ``` === Bruno MCP Server Health Check === Server Status: Running Server Version: 0.1.0 Node.js Version: v24.8.0 Platform: darwin arm64 Uptime: 0 seconds === Bruno CLI === Status: Available Version: Available (use --version for details) === Configuration === Logging Level: info Retry Enabled: Yes Security Enabled: No restrictions Secret Masking: Enabled Cache Enabled: Yes Cache TTL: 300000ms === Performance Metrics === Total Executions: 0 Success Rate: 0.00% Average Duration: 0.00ms By Tool: === Cache Statistics === Request List Cache: Size: 0 entries Total Hits: 0 === Status === All systems operational ``` ### Pending Item -
