# Phase 3 Implementation Summary
## Overview
Phase 3 focused on enhancing the Bruno MCP Server with configuration management, security hardening, and performance optimizations. This document summarizes what was implemented and tested.

## Phase 3.1 - Configuration System ✅ COMPLETE
### Implementation Details
**Files Created:**
- `src/config.ts` (258 lines) - Complete configuration management system
- `bruno-mcp.config.json` - Active configuration file
- `bruno-mcp.config.example.json` - Example configuration template
- `test-config.js` - Configuration testing script
**Features Implemented:**
1. **Schema-Based Configuration** (Zod validation)
   - Strict type checking for all configuration values
   - Default values for optional settings
   - Range validation (e.g., timeout 1000-300000ms)
2. **Multi-Location Configuration Loading**
   - Environment variable: `BRUNO_MCP_CONFIG`
   - Current working directory: `./bruno-mcp.config.json`
   - Home directory: `~/.bruno-mcp.config.json`
3. **Configuration Options**
   - `brunoCliPath` - Custom Bruno CLI path
   - `brunoHome` - Bruno home directory
   - `timeout` - Request and collection timeouts
   - `retry` - Retry configuration with backoff strategies
   - `security` - Path restrictions and secret masking
   - `logging` - Log levels and formats
   - `performance` - Caching configuration
4. **Secret Masking Utility**
   - Pattern-based detection (password, api_key, token, etc.)
   - Configurable patterns
   - Applied to error messages and logs
5. **Runtime Configuration Updates**
   - `updateConfig()` method for dynamic changes
   - Getter methods for specific config sections
   - Singleton pattern for global access

## Phase 3.2 - Security Enhancements ✅ COMPLETE (3/4)
### Implementation Details
**Files Created:**
- `src/security.ts` (248 lines) - Comprehensive security utilities
- `test-security.js` - Security validation testing script
**Features Implemented:**
1. **Path Validation**
   - Prevents directory traversal attacks
   - Validates against allowed paths (if configured)
   - Checks file existence
   - Absolute path resolution
2. **Input Sanitization**
   - Removes dangerous characters: `; & | \` $ ( ) { } [ ] < > \\`
   - Safe for shell execution
   - Applied to all user inputs
3. **Environment Variable Validation**
   - Name validation (alphanumeric + underscore only)
   - Value validation (prevents command injection)
   - Detects dangerous patterns:
     - Command injection: `; & | \``
     - Variable expansion: `${...}`
     - Command substitution: `$(...)`
     - Backtick execution: `` `...` ``
4. **Request/Folder Name Validation**
   - Prevents path traversal attempts (`..`)
   - Blocks absolute paths
   - Rejects null bytes
5. **Comprehensive Tool Parameter Validation**
   - Integrated into all MCP tool handlers
   - Returns detailed errors and warnings
   - Security event logging
6. **Secret Masking in Errors**
   - Masks secrets in error messages and stack traces
   - Uses configured patterns
   - Prevents credential leakage
7. **Security Event Logging**
   - Logs access denials
   - Logs validation warnings
   - Respects configured log level

## Phase 3.3 - Performance & Caching ✅ COMPLETE (3/4)
### Implementation Details
**Files Created:**
- `src/performance.ts` (379 lines) - Caching and metrics system
- `test-health.js` - Health check tool testing script
**Features Implemented:**
1. **In-Memory Cache with TTL**
   - Generic `Cache<T>` class
   - Configurable TTL (default: 5 minutes)
   - Automatic cleanup of expired entries
   - Hit tracking for statistics
2. **Request List Caching**
   - Caches `bruno_list_requests` results
   - Reduces file system operations
   - Configurable via `performance.cacheEnabled`
   - Cache invalidation methods
3. **Performance Manager Singleton**
   - Global performance tracking
   - Cache management
   - Metrics aggregation
4. **Execution Metrics Tracking**
   - Records timing for all tool executions
   - Tracks success/failure rates
   - Per-tool statistics
   - Keeps last 1000 metrics
5. **Metrics Summary**
   - Total executions
   - Overall success rate
   - Average duration
   - Per-tool breakdowns with:
     - Execution count
     - Success rate
     - Average duration
6. **Health Check Tool** (`bruno_health_check`)
   - Server status and version info
   - Bruno CLI availability check
   - Configuration display
   - Optional performance metrics (`includeMetrics: true`)
   - Optional cache statistics (`includeCacheStats: true`)
   - Node.js and platform information
   - Server uptime
7. **Integration**
   - Integrated caching into `BrunoCLI.listRequests()`
   - Cache hit logging
   - Performance metrics for all tools (ready for future use)

### Backward Compatibility
All changes are 100% backward compatible:
- Configuration is optional (defaults provided)
- Security validation allows all operations by default (unless paths configured)
- Caching is transparent to users
- Health check is a new optional tool
- All existing tools continue to work unchanged

## Testing Coverage
### Test Scripts Created
1. `test-config.js` - 4 tests for configuration system
2. `test-security.js` - 13 tests for security validation
3. `test-health.js` - 4 tests for health check tool
4. `test-mcp-server.js` - 5 integration tests (existing, still passing)
5. `test-reports.js` - 2 tests for report generation (existing, still passing)
