# Phase 3 - Logging System Implementation Summary ## Overview Successfully implemented a comprehensive structured logging system for the Bruno MCP Server with support for multiple formats, log levels, file output, and automatic rotation. --- ## Implementation Details ### 1. Synchronous vs Asynchronous Initialization **Decision**: Lazy async initialization **Rationale**: - Constructor can't be async - Directory creation requires filesystem operations - Initialization happens on first write, not construction - Avoids blocking server startup ### 2. Log Rotation Strategy **Decision**: Size-based rotation with configurable retention **Rationale**: - Simpler than time-based rotation - Predictable disk usage - No external dependencies (logrotate, etc.) - Works on all platforms ### 3. Secret Masking **Decision**: Automatic masking based on parameter names **Rationale**: - Prevents accidental credential exposure - Zero configuration required - Comprehensive coverage of common secret names - Applied at log time, not during execution ### 4. Singleton Pattern **Decision**: Global singleton logger instance **Rationale**: - Single configuration source - Consistent logging across application - No need to pass logger as parameter - Easy to access from any module --- ## Performance Considerations 1. **Lazy Initialization**: Directory creation deferred until first write 2. **Async File Operations**: Non-blocking writes with `fs.appendFile` 3. **Conditional Logging**: Level checks before formatting messages 4. **Efficient Rotation**: In-place file operations, no copying --- ## Backward Compatibility ✅ **100% Backward Compatible** - All logging is optional - Default behavior: console output only - Existing functionality unchanged - No breaking changes to tool interfaces --- ## Testing Results **Integration Tests:** All existing tests passing - ✅ test-mcp-server.js: 5/5 tests passing - ✅ test-phase2.js: 4/4 tests passing - ✅ test-introspection.js: 4/4 tests passing - ✅ test-dryrun.js: 5/5 tests passing - ✅ test-validation.js: 2/2 tests passing **New Tests:** Logging system tests - ✅ test-logging-simple.js: All tests passing - ✅ JSON format logging verified - ✅ Text format logging verified - ✅ Log file creation verified - ✅ Log rotation ready (not tested, logic verified) --- ## Known Limitations 1. **Log Rotation**: Rotation happens on write, not on schedule 2. **Async Nature**: File writes are fire-and-forget (errors logged to console) 3. **Platform Support**: Tested on macOS/Linux, should work on Windows --- ## Future Enhancements (Not in Current Scope) 1. Compression of rotated log files 2. Remote logging support (syslog, cloud logging) 3. Log aggregation and analysis tools 4. Performance metrics in log entries 5. Configurable timestamp formats 6.
