# Test Summary: NotificationOptions Bug Fix
## Overview
This document describes the comprehensive unit tests written for the bug fix in `src/memorygraph/server.py` where the server was failing to start due to an AttributeError when `notification_options=None` was being passed to `get_capabilities()`.
## The Bug
**Location**: `src/memorygraph/server.py`, line 854 (in the `main()` function)
**Issue**:
```python
# BEFORE (buggy code):
capabilities=server.server.get_capabilities(
notification_options=None, # <- This caused AttributeError
experimental_capabilities=None, # <- This also should be {}
),
```
When `get_capabilities()` tried to access attributes on the `None` notification_options, it raised an `AttributeError`, preventing the server from starting.
## The Fix
```python
# AFTER (fixed code):
capabilities=server.server.get_capabilities(
notification_options=NotificationOptions(), # <- Proper instance
experimental_capabilities={}, # <- Proper empty dict
),
```
**Changes**:
1. Added `NotificationOptions` to imports from `mcp.server` (line 15)
2. Changed `notification_options=None` to `notification_options=NotificationOptions()`
3. Changed `experimental_capabilities=None` to `experimental_capabilities={}`
## Test File
**Location**: `/Users/gregorydickson/claude-code-memory/tests/test_server_main_initialization.py`
## Test Coverage
### 1. TestMainFunctionInitialization (4 tests)
Tests the overall `main()` function lifecycle:
- **test_main_creates_server_instance**: Verifies a ClaudeMemoryServer instance is created
- **test_main_initializes_server**: Confirms `server.initialize()` is called during startup
- **test_main_calls_cleanup_on_exit**: Ensures cleanup happens on normal exit
- **test_main_cleanup_on_exception**: Ensures cleanup happens even when exceptions occur
### 2. TestNotificationOptionsInitialization (4 tests)
**Core tests for the bug fix** - verifies the fix works correctly:
- **test_notification_options_is_not_none**: Verifies NotificationOptions() is passed, not None
- **test_get_capabilities_called_with_notification_options**: Confirms get_capabilities receives proper NotificationOptions instance
- **test_experimental_capabilities_is_empty_dict**: Verifies experimental_capabilities is {} not None
- **test_no_attribute_error_during_initialization**: **Critical test** - ensures no AttributeError is raised (the original bug)
### 3. TestInitializationOptionsParameters (3 tests)
Tests the InitializationOptions construction:
- **test_initialization_options_server_name**: Verifies server_name is "claude-memory"
- **test_initialization_options_server_version**: Verifies server_version is "0.1.0"
- **test_initialization_options_capabilities_object**: Confirms capabilities object is properly constructed
### 4. TestServerRunIntegration (2 tests)
Tests the server.run() integration:
- **test_server_run_receives_streams**: Verifies read/write streams are passed correctly
- **test_server_run_receives_initialization_options**: Confirms InitializationOptions is passed to run()
### 5. TestNotificationOptionsInstance (2 tests)
Tests NotificationOptions class behavior:
- **test_notification_options_can_be_instantiated**: Verifies NotificationOptions() creates a valid instance
- **test_notification_options_has_no_attribute_error**: Confirms the instance doesn't cause AttributeError (vs None)
## Test Methodology
### Isolation
- All tests use mocks to avoid requiring a running database
- AsyncMock used for async methods (initialize, cleanup, run)
- Context managers properly mocked for stdio_server
### Verification Strategy
1. **Direct assertion**: Check that NotificationOptions() is used instead of None
2. **Type checking**: Verify correct types are passed to get_capabilities()
3. **Exception testing**: Ensure no AttributeError is raised (negative testing)
4. **Integration testing**: Verify the entire initialization flow works end-to-end
### Key Testing Patterns
```python
# Pattern 1: Mock the context manager
@asynccontextmanager
async def mock_stdio_context():
read_stream = AsyncMock()
write_stream = AsyncMock()
yield read_stream, write_stream
# Pattern 2: Verify method calls with correct types
def mock_get_capabilities(self, notification_options=None, experimental_capabilities=None):
assert notification_options is not None
assert isinstance(notification_options, NotificationOptions)
assert isinstance(experimental_capabilities, dict)
return original_get_capabilities(self, notification_options, experimental_capabilities)
# Pattern 3: Test cleanup in finally block
try:
await main()
except KeyboardInterrupt:
pass
finally:
mock_cleanup.assert_called_once() # Cleanup always called
```

## Integration with Existing Tests
These tests complement existing test files:
- `tests/test_server_init.py` - Tests server initialization and tool collection
- `tests/test_server.py` - Tests MCP handler methods
Combined test results:
- **47 tests total**: All passing
- **Coverage**: Main function initialization, handler registration, tool schemas, and individual handlers
## Key Takeaways
1. **Root Cause**: Passing `None` instead of a proper object instance caused AttributeError
2. **Fix Verification**: Tests explicitly verify NotificationOptions() is used, not None
3. **Regression Prevention**: Tests will fail if someone changes back to `None`
4. **Best Practices**:
- Use proper object instances, not None, when calling methods that expect objects
- Test both positive (correct behavior) and negative (no errors) cases
- Mock external dependencies to keep tests fast and isolated
- Follow existing test patterns in the codebase
## Running the Tests
```bash
# Run just the new tests
python3 -m pytest tests/test_server_main_initialization.py -v
# Run all server tests together
python3 -m pytest tests/test_server*.py -v
# Run with coverage
python3 -m pytest tests/test_server_main_initialization.py --cov=memorygraph.server --cov-report=term-missing
