# API Key Management Implementation Summary ## Overview Successfully implemented complete API Key Management feature for User Story 2 (Multi-tenant Hostaway MCP Server Dashboard). ## Tasks Completed ### ✅ T026 - API Keys Management Page **File:** `/dashboard/app/(dashboard)/api-keys/page.tsx` - Server Component with authentication check - Fetches organization's API keys from Supabase - Displays page header with description - Shows max 5 keys warning when limit reached - Includes security best practices notice - Integrates APIKeyList component ### ✅ T027 - API Key Generation Server Action **File:** `/dashboard/app/(dashboard)/api-keys/actions.ts` - `generateApiKey()` - Secure random key generation: `mcp_<32 random chars>` - Uses `crypto.randomBytes(24)` for cryptographic randomness - SHA-256 hashing before database storage - Validates max 5 active keys per organization - Returns full API key (shown once only) - Proper error handling and user feedback ### ✅ T028 - API Key Deletion Server Action **File:** `/dashboard/app/(dashboard)/api-keys/actions.ts` - `deleteApiKey()` - Verifies key ownership by organization - Soft delete (sets `is_active = false`) - Maintains audit trail - Browser confirmation before deletion - Loading states during operation ### ✅ T029 - API Key Regeneration Server Action **File:** `/dashboard/app/(dashboard)/api-keys/actions.ts` - `regenerateApiKey()` - Marks old key as inactive - Generates new secure random key - Returns new full key (shown once) - Browser confirmation before regeneration - Seamless UX flow through modal ### ✅ T030 - APIKeyList Component **File:** `/dashboard/components/api-keys/APIKeyList.tsx` - Client Component for interactive functionality - Masked key display: `abc123...xyz789` - Formatted dates (created, last used) - Status badges (Active/Inactive) - Action buttons (Regenerate, Delete) with loading states - Empty state with helpful message - Generate New Key button (disabled when at limit) ### ✅ T031 - APIKeyGenerateModal Component **File:** `/dashboard/components/api-keys/APIKeyGenerateModal.tsx` - Headless UI Dialog for accessibility - Four states: initial, generating, success, error - Security warnings before and after generation - Forces user acknowledgment ("I've saved my key") - Prevents accidental closure before key is saved - Smooth transitions and loading feedback ### ✅ T032 - APIKeyDisplay Component **File:** `/dashboard/components/api-keys/APIKeyDisplay.tsx` - Monospace code block for API key - Copy to clipboard with visual feedback - Shows checkmark for 2 seconds after copy - Security warning: "only time you'll see this key" - Responsive design ### ✅ T033 - Max 5 Keys Validation **Implementation:** Multiple locations - Server-side validation in `generateApiKey()` - Counts active keys before insertion - Returns descriptive error message - UI warning banner when at limit - Generate button disabled when at limit - Re-enables after deleting a key ## Technical Stack ### Dependencies Added - `@headlessui/react` v2.2.9 - Accessible UI components (modals, transitions) ### Existing Dependencies Used - Next.js 15.5.4 (App Router) - React 19.1.0 - Supabase (SSR + client) - Tailwind CSS 4 - TypeScript 5 ## Security Features 1. **Cryptographic Randomness** - Uses Node.js `crypto.randomBytes(24)` - Base64 encoded with special chars removed - 32 character random suffix 2. **Hash-Only Storage** - SHA-256 hash stored in database - Full key never logged or stored - One-time display to user 3. **Server-Side Validation** - All actions verify authentication - Organization membership checked - Key ownership verified before operations 4. **Masking in UI** - Keys displayed as: `abc123...xyz789` - First 6 + last 6 characters of hash - Full key only in generation modal 5. **Rate Limiting** - Max 5 active keys per organization - Enforced server-side before insertion ## File Structure ``` dashboard/ ├── app/ │ └── (dashboard)/ │ └── api-keys/ │ ├── page.tsx (Server Component - main page) │ └── actions.ts (Server Actions - CRUD operations) └── components/ └── api-keys/ ├── APIKeyList.tsx (Client Component - list & actions) ├── APIKeyGenerateModal.tsx (Client Component - generation flow) └── APIKeyDisplay.tsx (Client Component - copy functionality) ``` ## Key Design Decisions ### 1. Server Components by Default - Main page is Server Component for optimal performance - Reduces client-side JavaScript - Server-side data fetching with authentication ### 2. Client Components for Interactivity - List, modal, and display are Client Components - Needed for state management and event handlers - Uses 'use client' directive ### 3. Server Actions for Mutations - All CRUD operations are Server Actions - Provides built-in security and validation - Automatic revalidation with `revalidatePath()` ### 4. Soft Delete Pattern - Maintains audit trail - Keys not physically deleted - Can track key history and usage ### 5. One-Time Display - Security best practice - Forces users to save keys immediately - Prevents unauthorized access ### 6. Headless UI for Accessibility - WCAG compliant dialogs - Keyboard navigation - Screen reader support - Focus management ## API Key Format ``` mcp_<32 random alphanumeric characters> Example: mcp_a7b2c9d4e1f8g3h6i5j2k9l4m7n0p3q6 ``` - Prefix: `mcp_` (MCP = Model Context Protocol) - Length: 36 characters total (4 prefix + 32 random) - Character set: Base64 (alphanumeric, excluding +/=) - Entropy: 144 bits ## Database Schema Used ```typescript api_keys { id: number (primary key) organization_id: number (foreign key) key_hash: string (SHA-256, 64 hex chars) created_by_user_id: string (UUID) is_active: boolean last_used_at: string | null (timestamp) created_at: string (timestamp) } ``` ## User Flow ### Generate New Key 1. User clicks "Generate New Key" button 2. Modal opens with security warning 3. User clicks "Generate Key" 4. Server generates random key + hash 5. Hash saved to database 6. Full key returned and displayed once 7. User copies key to clipboard 8. User clicks "I've saved my key" 9. Modal closes, list refreshes ### Delete Key 1. User clicks "Delete" on active key 2. Browser confirmation dialog 3. User confirms 4. Server marks key as inactive 5. UI updates to show "Inactive" status 6. Action buttons removed ### Regenerate Key 1. User clicks "Regenerate" on active key 2. Browser confirmation dialog 3. User confirms 4. Modal opens (same as generate flow) 5. Old key marked inactive 6. New key generated and displayed 7. User copies new key 8.
