# Migration to 2-Tool Architecture - Status Report
## Summary
Successfully migrated MCP server from 7-tool implementation to consolidated 2-tool architecture.
## Changes Made
### 1. Updated `src/mcp_skills/mcp/tools/__init__.py`
- **Removed**: Import of legacy `skill_tools` module
- **Updated**: Now only imports `find_tool` and `skill_tool`
- **Added**: Documentation explaining the v2.0 architecture
- **Result**: Clean imports, no legacy tool registration
### 2. Archived Legacy Implementation
- **Renamed**: `skill_tools.py` → `skill_tools_legacy.py`
- **Purpose**: Preserved for reference, no longer imported
- **Benefit**: Prevents duplicate tool registration
## Tool Consolidation
### Before (7 tools)
1. `skills_search` - Semantic search
2. `skills_recommend` - Context-based recommendations
3. `skill_categories` - Category listing
4. `skill_templates_list` - Template listing
5. `skill_create` - Create new skill
6. `skill_read` - Read skill content
7. `skills_reindex` - Reindex skills
### After (2 tools)
1. **`find`** - Unified discovery tool
- Replaces: `skills_search`, `skills_recommend`, `skill_categories`, `skill_templates_list`
- Method routing: `find(by="semantic")`, `find(by="recommend")`, etc.
2. **`skill`** - Unified CRUD tool
- Replaces: `skill_create`, `skill_read`, `skills_reindex`
- Action routing: `skill(action="create")`, `skill(action="read")`, etc.
## Verification Results
✅ **Server Initialization**: SUCCESS
- Services configured correctly
- SkillManager, IndexingEngine, ToolchainDetector initialized
- No errors during startup
✅ **Tool Registration**: SUCCESS
- `find` tool registered via `@mcp.tool()` decorator
- `skill` tool registered via `@mcp.tool()` decorator
- No duplicate registrations from legacy tools
✅ **Import Test**: SUCCESS
```python
from mcp_skills.mcp.tools import find_tool, skill_tool # Works!
```
## Known Issues - Test Suite Needs Update
The following test files still import from legacy `skill_tools` module and will fail:
### Test Files Requiring Updates
1. **`tests/test_mcp_server.py`** (CRITICAL)
- 30+ references to `skill_tools` module
- Tests for all 7 legacy tools
- Mock patches reference old paths
2. **`tests/e2e/test_mcp_tools.py`**
- Imports: `skills_search`, `skills_recommend`, `skill_categories`, `skill_create`, `skill_read`
- End-to-end tests for tool functionality
3. **`tests/integration/test_workflows.py`**
- Imports: Multiple legacy tools
- Workflow integration tests
4. **`tests/e2e/test_skill_autodetect.py`**
- Imports: `skills_recommend`, `skills_reindex`
- Autodetection workflow tests
5. **`test_mcp_comparison.py`** (root level)
- Comparison tests for tool behavior
### Required Test Updates
#### Pattern 1: Update Imports
```python
# OLD
from mcp_skills.mcp.tools.skill_tools import skills_search, skills_recommend
# NEW
from mcp_skills.mcp.tools.find_tool import find
from mcp_skills.mcp.tools.skill_tool import skill
```
#### Pattern 2: Update Function Calls
```python
# OLD
result = await skills_search(query="pytest patterns", limit=5)
result = await skills_recommend(context=["python", "testing"])
# NEW
result = await find(by="semantic", query="pytest patterns", limit=5)
result = await find(by="recommend", context=["python", "testing"])
```
#### Pattern 3: Update Mock Paths
```python
# OLD
with patch("mcp_skills.mcp.tools.skill_tools.get_indexing_engine"):
# NEW
with patch("mcp_skills.mcp.tools.find_tool.get_indexing_engine"):
```
## Next Steps
### Phase 1: Test Migration (HIGH PRIORITY)
1. Update `tests/test_mcp_server.py` first (most critical)
- Convert all 7-tool tests to 2-tool equivalents
- Update mock paths
- Verify all edge cases covered
2. Update end-to-end tests
- `tests/e2e/test_mcp_tools.py`
- `tests/e2e/test_skill_autodetect.py`
3. Update integration tests
- `tests/integration/test_workflows.py`
4. Update comparison tests
- `test_mcp_comparison.py` (or remove if obsolete)
### Phase 2: Cleanup (MEDIUM PRIORITY)
1. Remove `skill_tools_legacy.py` after verifying all tests pass
2. Update any documentation referencing old tool names
3. Update CHANGELOG.md with migration notes
### Phase 3: Verification (BEFORE RELEASE)
1. Run full test suite: `uv run pytest --cov`
2. Verify 90%+ coverage maintained
3. Test with actual AI agents (Claude Desktop, Claude Code)
4. Update version and release notes
## Token Efficiency Gains
### Context Window Impact
- **Before**: 7 tools × ~500 tokens = ~3,500 tokens
- **After**: 2 tools × ~800 tokens = ~1,600 tokens
- **Savings**: ~1,900 tokens (54% reduction)
### Developer Experience
- Simpler API surface (2 vs 7 tools)
- Natural language routing (`by` and `action` parameters)
- Consistent error handling across all operations
- Easier to maintain and extend
## Success Criteria
- [x] Server starts without errors
- [x] New tools register correctly
- [x] No duplicate tool registration
- [x] Import tests pass
- [ ] All test suites updated and passing (IN PROGRESS)
- [ ] Test coverage maintained >85%
- [ ] Documentation updated
- [ ] Ready for release
