# Memory Extractor Gmail Connection Fix
## Problem
The MemoryExtractor component always showed "Connect Gmail" button even when user had valid Gmail OAuth tokens in the database, because it only checked browser localStorage and never queried the database.
## Root Cause
1. Component state `gmailConnected` was hardcoded to `false` (line 28)
2. No database connection check on component mount
3. Only localStorage was used for connection detection
4. No scope validation for `gmail.readonly` permission
## Solution
### 1. Enhanced `/api/google/status` Endpoint
**File**: `/Users/masa/Projects/mcp-memory-ts/web/app/api/google/status/route.ts`
**Changes**:
- Added `scopes` field to API response
- Parse OAuth token scopes from user metadata
- Return array of granted scopes for client-side validation
**Response Format**:
```json
{
"connected": true,
"email": "user@example.com",
"scopes": [
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts.readonly",
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonly",
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.readonly"
],
"lastSync": {
"contacts": "2025-10-17T12:00:00Z",
"calendar": "2025-10-17T12:00:00Z"
},
"stats": {
"contactsSynced": 150,
"eventsSynced": 42
}
}
```
### 2. Updated MemoryExtractor Component
**File**: `/Users/masa/Projects/mcp-memory-ts/web/components/utilities/memory-extractor.tsx`
**New Function**: `checkGmailConnection()`
```typescript
const checkGmailConnection = async () => {
try {
// Check if user has Google OAuth connection with Gmail scope
const response = await fetch('/api/google/status');
if (!response.ok) {
console.log('Google status check failed:', response.status);
return;
}
const data = await response.json();
console.log('Google status response:', data);
if (data.connected && data.email && data.scopes) {
// Check if scopes include gmail.readonly
const hasGmailScope = data.scopes.some((scope: string) =>
scope.includes('gmail.readonly') ||
scope.includes('gmail.modify') ||
scope.includes('gmail')
);
if (hasGmailScope) {
setGmailConnected(true);
setGmailEmail(data.email);
console.log('Gmail scope detected for:', data.email);
} else {
console.log('Google connected but no Gmail scope. Available scopes:', data.scopes);
}
}
} catch (error) {
console.error('Failed to check Gmail connection:', error);
}
};
```
**Enhanced UI**:
- Shows "Connected as user@example.com" when Gmail scope is present
- Displays "Reconnect Gmail" button for easy re-authorization
- Primary action button is "Extract This Week" when connected
- Better visual feedback with connection status badge
## Benefits
1. **Database-First**: Checks actual OAuth tokens stored in database
2. **Scope Validation**: Verifies Gmail-specific permissions
3. **Session Persistence**: Works across browser sessions and page refreshes
4. **No Duplicate OAuth**: Reuses existing Google OAuth tokens
5. **Clear Status**: Shows connection email and reconnect option
6. **Better UX**: Immediate feedback on component mount
## Testing
### Manual Test Steps
1. Navigate to `/utilities` page in web interface
2. Check that "Connected as [email]" appears if Gmail scope exists
3. Verify "Extract This Week" button is enabled
4. Check browser console for connection status logs
5. Refresh page - connection should persist
### Expected Behavior
- **With Gmail Scope**: Shows connected status + extraction button + reconnect option
- **Without Gmail Scope**: Shows "Connect Gmail" button
- **No Google Connection**: Shows "Connect Gmail" button
### Console Logs
```
Google status response: { connected: true, email: "user@example.com", scopes: [...] }
Gmail scope detected for: user@example.com
```
## Files Modified
1. `/web/app/api/google/status/route.ts`
- Added scopes parsing and return
- Lines 137-150
2. `/web/components/utilities/memory-extractor.tsx`
- Added `checkGmailConnection()` function (lines 32-64)
- Updated `useEffect` to call connection check (line 67-81)
- Enhanced UI with reconnect button (lines 274-301)
## Verification
Build succeeded without errors:
```bash
cd web && npm run build
# ✓ Build completed successfully
```
## Impact
- **LOC Added**: ~50 lines (connection check logic + enhanced UI)
- **LOC Removed**: 0 lines
- **Net Impact**: +50 lines (minimal, necessary for proper database integration)
- **Functionality**: Fixes critical bug where existing connections weren't detected
## Future Improvements
1. Add loading state during connection check
2. Show different badges for different connection states:
- "Connected" (green) - Gmail scope present
- "Partial" (yellow) - Google connected but no Gmail
- "Not Connected" (gray) - No Google OAuth
3. Add scope request button if Google connected but Gmail missing
4. Cache connection status with TTL to reduce API calls
## Related Issues
- Fixes: Gmail OAuth not detected from database
- Related: Google Contacts/Calendar sync already working correctly
- Integration: Uses same OAuth flow as existing Google features
