# Batch Sync Documentation Index
This directory contains all documentation related to batch synchronization features for Google Contacts and other services.
## Overview
Batch synchronization provides efficient processing of large datasets with progress tracking, error handling, and user feedback. This feature is particularly important for initial sync operations and bulk updates.

## Architecture
### Batch Processing Flow
```
Start Batch → Initialize Progress → Process Items (batches) → Update Progress → Complete
↓
Error Handling
↓
Retry Logic
```
### Components
1. **Batch Manager**: Coordinates batch processing
2. **Progress Tracker**: Tracks and reports progress
3. **Error Handler**: Manages errors and retries
4. **Rate Limiter**: Enforces API rate limits
5. **UI Updater**: Updates web interface
## Configuration
### Batch Processing Settings
```typescript
interface BatchConfig {
batchSize: number; // Items per batch (default: 50)
concurrency: number; // Parallel batches (default: 1)
retryAttempts: number; // Max retries (default: 3)
retryDelay: number; // Delay between retries (ms)
progressInterval: number; // UI update interval (ms)
}
```
### Example Configuration
```javascript
const config = {
batchSize: 50, // Process 50 contacts at a time
concurrency: 1, // Process batches sequentially
retryAttempts: 3, // Retry failed items up to 3 times
retryDelay: 1000, // Wait 1 second between retries
progressInterval: 500 // Update UI every 500ms
};
```
## Usage Examples
### Google Contacts Batch Sync
```bash
# CLI batch sync with progress
mcp-memory google contacts-sync \
--user-email user@example.com \
--direction import \
--batch-size 50
# With auto-merge (LLM deduplication)
mcp-memory google contacts-sync \
--user-email user@example.com \
--direction import \
--auto-merge \
--batch-size 100
```
### Web Interface
```typescript
// Start batch sync from web UI
const response = await fetch('/api/google/contacts/sync', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({
direction: 'import',
batchSize: 50,
autoMerge: true
})
});
// Poll for progress updates
const progressResponse = await fetch('/api/google/contacts/sync/progress');
const progress = await progressResponse.json();
// { processed: 150, total: 500, percentage: 30, status: 'processing' }
```
## Progress Tracking API
### Progress Object Structure
```typescript
interface BatchProgress {
status: 'idle' | 'processing' | 'completed' | 'error';
total: number; // Total items to process
processed: number; // Items processed so far
succeeded: number; // Successfully processed
failed: number; // Failed to process
skipped: number; // Skipped (e.g., duplicates)
percentage: number; // Progress percentage (0-100)
currentOperation: string;// Current operation description
errors: BatchError[]; // List of errors
startTime: number; // Start timestamp
estimatedCompletion?: number; // Estimated completion time
}
```
### Error Object Structure
```typescript
interface BatchError {
itemId: string; // ID of failed item
error: string; // Error message
retryCount: number; // Number of retry attempts
timestamp: number; // Error timestamp
}
```
## Best Practices
### Batch Size Selection
- **Small batches (10-50)**: Better progress granularity, more API calls
- **Medium batches (50-100)**: Balanced approach (recommended)
- **Large batches (100+)**: Fewer API calls, less granular progress
### Error Handling
1. **Log all errors**: Track what went wrong
2. **Aggregate errors**: Group similar errors
3. **Retry transient errors**: Network issues, rate limits
4. **Skip permanent errors**: Invalid data, permission issues
### Progress Updates
1. **Update frequency**: Balance between UX and performance
2. **Meaningful messages**: Show current operation
3. **Estimated time**: Calculate based on current rate
4. **Error visibility**: Show errors without blocking progress
## Troubleshooting
### Slow Batch Processing
```bash
# Increase batch size
--batch-size 100
# Enable parallel processing (if supported)
--concurrency 2
# Check rate limiting logs
LOG_LEVEL=debug mcp-memory google contacts-sync ...
```
### Memory Issues
```bash
# Reduce batch size
--batch-size 25
# Disable concurrency
--concurrency 1
# Monitor memory usage
top -pid $(pgrep -f mcp-memory)
```
### Progress Not Updating
```bash
# Check progress endpoint
curl http://localhost:3002/api/google/contacts/sync/progress
# Enable debug logging
LOG_LEVEL=debug
# Check web UI console for errors
# Open browser developer tools
```
### High Error Rate
```bash
# Review error logs
grep ERROR .claude-mpm/logs/*.log
# Check API authentication
mcp-memory google auth --user-email user@example.com
# Verify API quotas
# Check Google Cloud Console for quota usage
```
## Performance Metrics
### Target Metrics
- **Processing Rate**: 50-100 items/second
- **Progress Update Latency**: <500ms
- **Error Rate**: <1%
- **Memory Usage**: <100MB per 1000 items
### Monitoring
```bash
# Check processing logs
tail -f .claude-mpm/logs/batch-sync.log
# Monitor system resources
htop
# Check database performance
# Review Turso dashboard
```
