# Google Contacts Batch Sync Implementation
## Overview
Implemented batch processing for Google Contacts sync to handle large contact lists that previously caused timeouts. The implementation supports processing contacts in configurable batch sizes with real-time progress tracking and cancellation support.
## Problem Solved
**Before:**
- Sync operations timed out after 60 seconds
- Users with large contact lists (500+ contacts) couldn't complete sync
- No progress indication for long-running operations
- No way to cancel ongoing syncs
**After:**
- Batch processing handles unlimited contact list sizes
- Each batch completes within timeout window (< 60 seconds per batch)
- Real-time progress tracking with batch number and contact counts
- User can cancel sync at any time
- Partial results are preserved on cancellation
## Architecture
### Backend Implementation
#### 1. API Route (`web/app/api/google/contacts/sync/route.ts`)
**Changes:**
- Added `pageToken` and `pageSize` parameters to request body
- Increased timeout from 60 seconds to 5 minutes for batch operations
- Added pagination fields to response: `nextPageToken`, `hasMore`, `totalProcessed`, `totalAvailable`
**Request Format:**
```typescript
{
direction: 'import' | 'export' | 'both',
dryRun?: boolean,
forceFull?: boolean,
useLLM?: boolean,
pageToken?: string, // NEW: For pagination
pageSize?: number // NEW: Contacts per batch (default: 100)
}
```
**Response Format:**
```typescript
{
success: boolean,
imported: number,
updated: number,
exported: number,
duplicatesFound: number,
merged: number,
errors: string[],
nextPageToken?: string, // NEW: Token for next batch
hasMore?: boolean, // NEW: Whether more batches remain
totalProcessed?: number, // NEW: Contacts in this batch
totalAvailable?: number // NEW: Total contacts (if known)
}
```
#### 2. Sync Service (`src/services/google-contacts-sync.ts`)
**Changes:**
- Added `pageToken` and `pageSize` to `GoogleContactsSyncOptions`
- Added pagination fields to `GoogleContactsSyncResult`
- Detects batch mode vs full sync mode based on `pageToken` presence
- Uses `listContacts()` for batch mode (paginated) vs `getAllContacts()` for full sync
- Only saves sync token for full sync, not batch mode
- Returns pagination info in batch mode
**Batch Mode Logic:**
```typescript
const isBatchRequest = !!options.pageToken;
const syncResult = isBatchRequest
? await client.listContacts(options.pageToken, options.pageSize || 100)
: await client.getAllContacts(syncToken);
```
#### 3. Google People Client (`src/integrations/google-people-client.ts`)
**Existing Support:**
- Already had `listContacts()` method with pageToken support
- Already had `pageSize` parameter support
- No changes required - existing implementation is perfect for batch processing
### Frontend Implementation
#### 1. Component State (`web/components/google/google-contacts-sync.tsx`)
**New State Variables:**
```typescript
const [useBatchMode, setUseBatchMode] = useState(false);
const [batchSize, setBatchSize] = useState(100);
const [syncProgress, setSyncProgress] = useState<SyncProgress | null>(null);
const [cancelRequested, setCancelRequested] = useState(false);
```
**Progress Tracking:**
```typescript
interface SyncProgress {
current: number; // Contacts processed so far
total: string | number; // Total contacts ('?' if unknown)
status: string; // Current status message
batchNumber: number; // Current batch number
}
```
#### 2. Batch Sync Logic
**Algorithm:**
1. Initialize counters: `totalImported`, `totalUpdated`, `totalExported`, `batchNumber`
2. Loop while `pageToken` exists or `hasMore` is true:
- Check if user requested cancellation
- Display progress: "Processing batch X..."
- Make API call with `pageToken` and `pageSize`
- Accumulate results from this batch
- Update progress display
- Get `nextPageToken` from response
- Add 500ms delay between batches (rate limit protection)
3. Display final results with cumulative totals
**Cancellation Support:**
- User can click "Cancel Sync" button during batch processing
- Sets `cancelRequested` flag
- Next batch iteration detects flag and exits gracefully
- Partial results are saved and displayed
#### 3. UI Components
**Batch Mode Toggle:**
- Checkbox to enable batch processing
- When enabled, shows batch size selector (50/100/150/200)
- Disables "Force Full Sync" option (incompatible with batch mode)
**Progress Display:**
- Shows during batch sync operations
- Real-time updates: "Processing batch X..."
- Progress bar (if total count known)
- Contact counts: "Processed: X of Y"
**Cancel Button:**
- Only visible during batch sync
- Gracefully stops after current batch completes
## Usage
### For Users with Large Contact Lists
1. **Enable Batch Mode:**
- Check "Batch Mode" option in sync settings
- Select batch size (100 recommended, 50 for slower connections)
2. **Start Sync:**
- Click "Start Batch Sync"
- Watch real-time progress
- Each batch processes in 30-60 seconds
- Total time: ~1 minute per 100 contacts
3. **Cancel if Needed:**
- Click "Cancel Sync" button
- Current batch completes
- Partial results are saved
### For Users with Small Contact Lists
1. **Use Regular Sync:**
- Leave "Batch Mode" unchecked
- Use "Force Full Sync" if needed
- Faster for < 200 contacts
## Performance Characteristics
### Batch Processing Mode
| Contact Count | Batch Size | Batches | Estimated Time |
|---------------|------------|---------|----------------|
| 100 | 100 | 1 | 30-60s |
| 500 | 100 | 5 | 5-10 min |
| 1000 | 100 | 10 | 10-20 min |
| 2000 | 100 | 20 | 20-40 min |
**Notes:**
- Processing time per batch: 30-60 seconds
- Includes 500ms delay between batches
- LLM deduplication adds time per contact
- Network speed affects overall duration
### Full Sync Mode (Original)
| Contact Count | Timeout Risk | Recommended |
|---------------|--------------|-------------|
| < 100 | Low | ✅ Use full sync |
| 100-200 | Medium | ⚠️ Consider batch mode |
| 200-500 | High | ❌ Use batch mode |
| > 500 | Very High | ❌ Use batch mode |
## Error Handling
### Batch Failures
**Scenario:** One batch fails during sync
**Behavior:**
- Previous batches are already saved to database
- Error is logged and displayed
- User can retry remaining batches
- Partial success is indicated
### Network Timeouts
**Scenario:** Network connection lost during batch
**Behavior:**
- Current batch fails
- Previous batches are preserved
- User can restart with "Force Full Sync" disabled
- Incremental sync will pick up from last successful batch
### Rate Limiting
**Scenario:** Google API rate limits triggered
**Behavior:**
- 500ms delay between batches helps prevent rate limits
- If rate limited, error message indicates retry time
- User can adjust batch size down (e.g., 50 instead of 100)
- Retry after indicated delay
## Testing Plan
### Unit Tests (Manual Verification)
1. **Small Contact List (< 100 contacts)**
- Test both full sync and batch mode
- Verify batch mode completes in 1 batch
- Compare results are identical
2. **Medium Contact List (200-500 contacts)**
- Test full sync (should timeout or barely complete)
- Test batch mode with 100 contacts per batch
- Verify all contacts imported correctly
- Check progress updates are accurate
3. **Large Contact List (1000+ contacts)**
- Test batch mode only (full sync will timeout)
- Verify multiple batches process correctly
- Check cumulative totals are accurate
- Ensure no duplicates created
### Integration Tests
4. **Cancellation Test**
- Start batch sync with large list
- Cancel after 2-3 batches
- Verify partial results are saved
- Restart sync and verify no duplicates
5. **Network Failure Test**
- Start batch sync
- Simulate network failure mid-batch
- Verify graceful error handling
- Restart and verify recovery
6. **Rate Limit Test**
- Process very large list (2000+ contacts)
- Monitor for rate limit errors
- Verify 500ms delay prevents most rate limits
- Adjust batch size if needed
### Performance Tests
7. **Batch Size Comparison**
- Test with 50, 100, 150, 200 contacts per batch
- Measure total time for 500 contacts
- Verify 100 is optimal balance
- Document any issues with larger batch sizes
8. **LLM Deduplication Impact**
- Test batch sync with LLM enabled vs disabled
- Measure time difference
- Verify duplicate detection works correctly in batch mode
9. **Progress Accuracy**
- Verify progress bar updates correctly
- Check batch number increments properly
- Ensure final totals match accumulated results
