# vCard CLI Implementation Summary
## Overview
Successfully implemented a comprehensive CLI tool for importing and exporting entities (contacts) in vCard format (RFC 6350) for the mcp-memory-ts project.
## What Was Implemented
### 1. Core vCard Module (`src/vcard/`)
- **types.ts**: TypeScript interfaces for vCard data structures
- VCardData interface with all standard fields
- Custom MCP properties (X-MCP-*)
- Import/export options and result types
- **parser.ts**: RFC 6350-compliant vCard parser
- Supports vCard 3.0 and 4.0 formats
- Line unfolding and proper escaping
- Structured name and address parsing
- Custom MCP property extraction
- **generator.ts**: vCard text generator
- Generates RFC 6350-compliant vCard text
- Line folding at 75 characters
- Proper value escaping
- Support for both vCard 3.0 and 4.0
- **mapper.ts**: Entity <-> vCard conversion
- `entityToVCard()`: Convert Entity to VCardData
- `vcardToEntity()`: Convert VCardData to Entity
- Field validation (email, URL formats)
- Smart name parsing
### 2. CLI Commands (`src/cli/`)
- **commands/export.ts**: Export entities to vCard
- Filter by entity type
- Support for vCard 3.0 and 4.0
- Batch export with progress reporting
- Export statistics and breakdown
- **commands/import.ts**: Import vCard files
- Dry-run mode for safe testing
- Merge mode to skip existing entities (by name/email)
- Batch import with error handling
- Detailed import summary and error reporting
- **index.ts**: Main CLI entry point
- Commander.js-based CLI framework
- Three commands: export-vcard, import-vcard, list-types
- Comprehensive help and options
- Environment variable integration
### 3. Field Mappings
| vCard Property | Entity Field | Notes |
|---------------|--------------|-------|
| FN | name | Required field |
| N | - | Parsed for name components |
| EMAIL | email | First email used |
| TEL | phone | First phone used |
| ADR | address | Formatted as single string |
| ORG | company | Organization name |
| TITLE | title | Job title |
| URL | website | First URL used |
| NOTE | notes | Notes/description |
| CATEGORIES | tags | Array of tags |
### 4. Custom MCP Properties
Extended vCard format with X- prefix properties:
- `X-MCP-ENTITY-TYPE`: Entity type (person, organization, etc.)
- `X-MCP-PERSON-TYPE`: Person type (colleague, friend, etc.)
- `X-MCP-IMPORTANCE`: Importance level (1-4)
- `X-MCP-SOCIAL-MEDIA`: Social media handles
- `X-MCP-RELATIONSHIPS`: Relationship descriptions
- `X-MCP-LAST-INTERACTION`: Last interaction timestamp
- `X-MCP-INTERACTION-COUNT`: Interaction count
### 5. Package Configuration
Updated `package.json`:
```json
{
"bin": {
"mcp-memory-cli": "./dist/cli/index.js"
},
"scripts": {
"cli": "tsx src/cli/index.ts",
"cli:export": "tsx src/cli/index.ts export-vcard",
"cli:import": "tsx src/cli/index.ts import-vcard",
"cli:types": "tsx src/cli/index.ts list-types"
}
}
```
### 6. Documentation
- **VCARD-CLI.md**: Comprehensive user documentation
- Installation instructions
- Command reference with examples
- Field mapping tables
- Use cases and troubleshooting
- Advanced usage examples
- **test-contacts.vcf**: Sample vCard file for testing
- 3 sample contacts with different types
- Demonstrates all field types
- Shows custom MCP properties
- **test-vcard-cli.sh**: Test script
- Verifies CLI functionality
- Tests all commands
- Validates parsing
## Usage Examples
### Export Entities
```bash
# Export all person entities
npm run cli:export -- --user-email user@example.com
# Export to custom file
npm run cli -- export-vcard --user-email user@example.com -o contacts.vcf
# Export all types
npm run cli -- export-vcard --user-email user@example.com --all
# Export in vCard 3.0 format
npm run cli -- export-vcard --user-email user@example.com -f 3.0
```
### Import vCard
```bash
# Import with dry-run (preview)
npm run cli -- import-vcard contacts.vcf --user-email user@example.com --dry-run
# Import contacts
npm run cli -- import-vcard contacts.vcf --user-email user@example.com
# Import with merge (skip existing)
npm run cli -- import-vcard contacts.vcf --user-email user@example.com --merge
# Import with tags
npm run cli -- import-vcard contacts.vcf --user-email user@example.com --tags work,tech
```
### List Types
```bash
npm run cli:types
```

### Design Principles
1. **Separation of Concerns**: vCard utilities are independent of CLI
2. **Reusability**: Can be used programmatically or via CLI
3. **Type Safety**: Full TypeScript coverage
4. **Error Handling**: Comprehensive error messages
5. **User Experience**: Clear progress and feedback
6. **Standards Compliance**: RFC 6350 adherence
## Testing
CLI has been tested with:
- ✅ Help commands work correctly
- ✅ List-types displays all options
- ✅ Parser correctly handles vCard format
- ✅ Validates fields (email, URL)
- ✅ Escaping and unescaping works
- ✅ Line folding at 75 characters
- ✅ Custom MCP properties preserved
## Integration Points
The vCard module integrates with:
1. **Database Layer**: `DatabaseOperations` for entity CRUD
2. **Core Models**: `createEntity()` for entity creation
3. **Type System**: `EntityType`, `PersonType`, `ImportanceLevel` enums
4. **Multi-tenant**: User authentication and isolation
## Future Enhancements
Possible improvements:
- [ ] Photo/avatar support (PHOTO property)
- [ ] Multiple email/phone/URL support
- [ ] Geo-coordinates support (GEO property)
- [ ] Birthday support (BDAY property)
- [ ] Organization hierarchy (ORG with multiple components)
- [ ] Export filters (by tags, importance, etc.)
- [ ] Import progress bar for large files
- [ ] Validation report generation
- [ ] Automatic duplicate detection

## Conclusion
The vCard CLI implementation provides a complete, standards-compliant solution for importing and exporting contacts between the MCP Memory system and any vCard-compatible application (phone apps, email clients, CRMs, etc.). The implementation is production-ready, well-documented, and follows best practices for TypeScript/Node.js CLI tools.
