# Google Contacts Sync Optimization - Implementation Summary
**Date**: 2025-10-16
**Status**: ✅ **COMPLETE AND READY FOR TESTING**
**Build Status**: ✅ Compiled successfully
**All Tests**: ✅ Passed
---
## What Was Fixed
### 1. ✅ Added Batch Size 25 Option
- **Before**: Minimum batch size was 50 contacts
- **After**: Now supports 25 contacts (labeled "Slowest, safest")
- **Default**: Changed from 100 to 50 for improved reliability
- **Options**: 25, 50 (recommended), 100, 150
### 2. ✅ Fixed Logging for PM2 Production
- **Problem**: Console.log wasn't appearing in PM2 logs
- **Solution**: Replaced all logging with `process.stderr.write()`
- **Result**: All logs now visible in `pm2 logs mcp-memory-web`
- **Files Changed**:
- `src/services/google-contacts-sync.ts`
- `web/app/api/google/contacts/sync/route.ts`
### 3. ✅ Dynamic Timeout Based on Batch Size
- **Before**: Fixed 5-minute timeout for all batch sizes
- **After**: Timeout scales with batch size (2s per contact + 1min buffer)
- **Examples**:
- 25 contacts: 110 seconds (1m 50s)
- 50 contacts: 160 seconds (2m 40s)
- 100 contacts: 260 seconds (4m 20s)
- 150 contacts: 360 seconds (6m 0s)
### 4. ✅ Improved Error Handling
- Better error messages showing current batch size
- Proper abort handling on timeout
- Graceful error propagation to UI
---
## Performance Impact
### Net Code Changes
- **Lines Added**: ~30 (new features)
- **Lines Removed**: ~50 (simplified logging)

# - Dry Run: Enabled (recommended for testing)
# - LLM Deduplication: Your choice
# 4. Click "Start Batch Sync"
# 5. Verify:
# ✓ Progress shows batch updates
# ✓ Each batch processes ~25 contacts
# ✓ No timeout errors
# ✓ Completes successfully
```
### Production Test (PM2)
```bash
# 1. Ensure build is up to date
cd /Users/masa/Projects/mcp-memory-ts/web
npm run build
cd ..
# 2. Restart PM2
pm2 restart mcp-memory-web
# 3. Monitor logs in real-time
pm2 logs mcp-memory-web --lines 100
# 4. In another terminal, open browser
open http://localhost:3001/utilities
# 5. Run a sync with batch size 25 or 50
# 6. Watch for logs like:
# [GoogleContactsSync API][req-xxxxx] ===== REQUEST STARTED =====
# [GoogleContactsSync Service] Importing from Google Contacts...
# [GoogleContactsSync Service] Fetched 25 contacts from Google
# [GoogleContactsSync Service] Batch complete: 5 imported, 20 updated

### Verify Logging Works
```bash
# Run test script
./TEST_GOOGLE_SYNC_OPTIMIZATION.sh
# Expected output: All tests should pass with ✅
```

## FAQ
**Q: Which batch size should I use?**
A: Start with 50 (recommended default). If you experience timeouts or have a slow network, use 25.
**Q: Why aren't logs appearing in PM2?**
A: Ensure you restart PM2 after building: `pm2 restart mcp-memory-web`
**Q: What if I still get timeout errors?**
A: Try batch size 25. If still timing out, check your network connection and Google API status.
**Q: Can I use batch size larger than 150?**
A: Not recommended. The UI limits to 150 to prevent timeouts. Use multiple syncs if needed.
**Q: Will this work with export/both directions?**
A: Yes, all sync directions support the new batch sizes and timeouts.

## Support
**If you encounter issues:**
1. **Check PM2 logs**: `pm2 logs mcp-memory-web --lines 200`
2. **Verify batch size**: Use 25 or 50 for best results
3. **Check network**: Slow networks need smaller batch sizes
4. **Test in dry-run mode**: Enable "Dry Run Mode" to test without applying changes
5. **Review error logs**: `pm2 logs mcp-memory-web --err`
**Contact**: (your contact information)
